"Drácula" es una novela publicada en 1897 por el irlandés Bram Stoker, quien ha convertido a su protagonista en el vampiro más famoso. Se dice que el escritor se basó en las conversaciones que mantuvo con un erudito húngaro llamado Arminius Vámbéry, quien le habló de Vlad Drăculea. La novela, escrita de manera epistolar, presenta otros temas, como el papel de la mujer en la época victoriana, la sexualidad, la inmigración, el colonialismo o el folclore. Como curiosidad, cabe destacar que Bram Stoker no inventó la leyenda vampírica, pero la influencia de la novela ha logrado llegar al cine, el teatro y la televisión. La historia es epistolar. Consiste en la lectura de una serie de documentos, siendo, en su mayoría, los diarios de los personajes. Pese a su claro afán de objetividad, no omiten las opiniones, sensaciones y sentimientos de sus respectivos autores. La obra en sí comienza cuando Jonathan Harker, un joven abogado inglés de Londres comprometido con Wilhemina Murray (Mina) se encuentra en la ciudad de Bistritz y debe viajar a través del desfiladero del Borgo hasta el remoto castillo del conde Drácula, en los Montes Cárpatos de Transilvania, una de las regiones más lejanas de la Hungría de esa época, para cerrar unas ventas con él. Convirtiéndose durante un breve período de tiempo en huésped del conde, el joven inglés va descubriendo que la personalidad de Drácula es, cuanto menos, extraña: no se refleja en los espejos, no come nunca en su presencia y hace vida nocturna. Poco a poco va descubriendo que es un ser despreciable, ruin y despiadado que acabará convirtiéndole en un rehén en el propio castillo. En el mismo también viven tres jóvenes y bellas vampiresas que una noche seducen a Jonathan y están a punto de chuparle la sangre, cosa que evita la interrupción del conde. Para evitarlo, Drácula les entrega un niño que ha secuestrado para que se beban su sangre. La madre del bebé no tarda en llegar al castillo para reclamarlo, pero el conde ordena a los lobos que la devoren. Teniendo al joven Jonathan Harker prisionero en su castillo, el Conde decide viajar a Londres, pero ha de hacerlo metido en una caja con tierra de Transilvania, ya que debe descansar en la tierra sagrada de su patria. Para alcanzar su destino, debe viajar en carruaje hasta un puerto cercano al estrecho del Bósforo, y desde allí proseguir en barco desde Varna hasta Whitby, en la costa de Inglaterra, atravesando el estrecho de los Dardanelos. Al mismo tiempo, para encontrar un poco de descanso, la joven Mina Murray decide pasar una temporada veraniega con su amiga íntima de infancia Lucy Westenra en la casa solariega que esta posee en Whitby, en la costa de Yorkshire. Lucy es una hermosa joven de clase acomodada que vive en una lujosa mansión junto a su madre viuda, la señora Westenra. Lucy padece de sonambulismo y Drácula se aprovecha de ello para chuparle la sangre por primera vez en el cementerio de Whitby, hecho sangriento del cual Mina es testigo; en este episodio recoge a Lucy y la lleva de vuelta a su casa...
