About the Book

Post-harvest technology - currently the focus of intense scientific and technical study has experienced a virtual explosion of activity since 1980. Along the way a great deal of attention has turned to grain quality in the world marketplace. Realizing that proper control of moisture content is the key to the delivery of quality grain to its place of ultimate use noted experts Brooker Bakker-Arkema and Hall offer a new state-of-the-art book on the theory and art of drying and storage. The book reflects their 115 years of combined experience in teaching research writing and design of crop drying processes and equipment. With a distinct eye toward the future Drying and Storage of Grains and Oilseed offers clear-cut practical information on the drying of cereal and feed grains (corn wheat rice oats sorghum barley) and oilseeds (soybeans canola sunflower seed). Complete in its coverage the book presents discussions of the basic physical and thermodynamic properties of grain and air as well as the drying process theory. In addition the design of on-farm and off-farm dryers together with the optimum operating conditions for these dryers are included. About the Author Donald B. Brooker is presently Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia.During his thirty-five years of research and teaching in the field of crop drying and materials handling he received numerous teaching and educational awards including the prestigious Massey- Ferguson Medal from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. He is also a Fellow of the ASAE. Fred W. Bakker Arkema is currently Professor of Agricultural Engineering at MiChigan State University and developed the universitys classic grain drying model (also known as the DE or differential equations model) He is also a national and international consultant on crop drying and crop drying equipment. Carl W. Hall is a retired deputy assistant director of the Directorate for Engineering at the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C.
