About the Author

Dr. Harshawardhan Mardikar, MD DM DNB FSCAI FACC, is Director of Spandan Heart Institute & Research Center, Nagpur, and founding member of the Cardiovascular Society of India He is a graduate of Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur. He completed his MD in Internal Medicine in 1990 and was awarded four gold medals in MD Medicine by Nagpur University. In the same year Dr Mardikar also received Senior Research Fellowship of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi. His DM (card), Mumbai University and DNB (card) in 1993 from Sion Hospital, Mumbai completed his formal education as a cardiologist. He subsequently joined Sion Hospital as Assistant Professor of Cardiology. During his tenure at Sion, he was awarded the Rotary International Academic Fellowship in 1996-97 and also received the DP Basu Young Scientist Award for Best Scientific Research Paper in Cardiology at Annual Conference of Cardiological Society of India, Bangalore in October 1996 In 1998, he joined as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Medical Post Graduate Institute and Super Speciality Hospital Nagpur, where he was instrumental in setting up the Department of Cardiology and the Interventional Cardiology unit. Dr Mardikar has delivered many talks including the “Umarani Banerjee Memorial Oration” at the Cardiological Society of India annual conference in 1999. He has been a regular guest faculty at the European Society of Cardiology annual meetings as well as at EuroPCR Dr Mardikar has publications in many index journals. He is a fellow of The Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) and The American College of Cardiology (FACC). Dr Mardikar has served as Chairman of the National Intervention Council, 2010-2012 and is currently Vice President of the Cardiological Society of India. Dr Mardikar has been a member of the editorial board of JAPI and IHJ for two terms in the past and is once again on the editorial board of the Indian Heart Journal. He has publications in JAPI, Post Graduate Medical Journal (UK), JACC, Lancet, Indian Heart Journal. He regularly contributes updates for the API and CSI. Dr Mardikar has a very close working association with Prof Lionel Opie. Their collaborative work has resulted in two publications in the “Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa and Cardiovascular Drugs Therapeutics. They have both very recently worked together on a book, “Management of Acute Myocardial Infarction,” edited by Prof Lionel Opie and Prof Bernard Gersh, consulting editor, Dr Mardikar, published by Elsevier.
