Von grosster Bedeutung fur Walsers schriftstellerische Entwicklung in der 2. Halfte der 1920er Jahre war seine Verbindung zur Feuilletonredaktion der Prager Presse. Uber 200 Beitrage, weit mehr als in irgendeiner anderen Zeitung, sind dort erschienen. Diese hohe Prasenz hatte ihren Grund im besonderen kulturpolitischen Auftrag dieses Feuilletons. Der Kulturteil der nach Grundung der tschechischen Republik ins Leben gerufenen, mit staatlichen Mitteln finanzierten Zeitung sollte einerseits die Bindung der deutschsprachigen Minderheit an den tschechischen Staat befordern, andererseits im Ausland das hohe Niveau des tschechisch-deutschen Kulturlebens reprasentieren. Die Redaktion war daher mit den entsprechenden Mitteln ausgestattet und um namhafte Beitrager bemuht. Ein breites Spektrum der literarischen Moderne von Peter Altenberg bis Stefan Zweig war hier vertreten. Die Lekture im Kontext dieser Zeitung eroffnet neue Perspektiven auf Walsers spate Berner Prosa, etwa auf die besondere Nahe ihrer poetologischen Modernitat zu den avantgardistischen Bestrebungen der Prager Literatur- und Kunstszene nach 1918. Auch genrespezifische Fragen und Beobachtungen lassen sich mit Walsers Prager Veroffentlichungen verbinden. So sind die zahlreichen Gedichte, die (fast) nur hier zu lesen waren und die eine neue Periode der lyrischen Produktion in Walsers Spatwerk horbar werden lassen, eine Besonderheit der Veroffentlichungen in der Prager Presse. Aber auch die ubrigen Publikationen in der Prager Presse bilden innerhalb von Walsers Spatwerk ein eigenes Corpus, das sich beispielsweise von den Publikationen in der NZZ oder im Berliner Tageblatt signifikant unterscheidet. Da ein grosser Teil der Druckmanuskripte in der Sammlung des Chefredakteurs Arne Laurin uberliefert ist, ist hier ein analytischer Vergleich von Zeitungsdrucken und Manuskripten (die in KWA V.2 ediert werden) in einzigartiger Weise moglich. Das Editorische Nachwort charakterisiert die Zeitung und Walsers Beziehung zu ihr. Der Dokumentarische Anhang versammelt die zahlreichen Briefe an den Feuilletonredaktor Otto Pick und weitere Zeugnisse, die uber diese Beziehung Aufschluss geben konnen oder Aussagen zu bestimmten Texten enthalten. Die elektronische Edition enthalt die Faksimiles der originalen Zeitungsdrucke.
