Casanova, Stendhal, Tolstoi, diese drei Namen, ich weiß es, sie passen im ersten Zuklang mehr überraschend als überzeugend zusammen, und man wird sich zunächst das Wertniveau nicht erdenken können, auf dem sich ein lockerer, amoralischer Filou und zweifelhafter Künstler wie Casanova mit einem heroischen Ethiker, einem so vollkommenen Gestalter wie Tolstoi begegnet. Tatsächlich meint auch diesmal Beisammensein in einem Buche nicht Nebeneinandersein auf derselben geistigen Ebene; im Gegenteil, diese drei Namen symbolisieren drei Stufen, ein Übereinander also, eine immer erhöhte Wesensform gleicher Gattung, sie repräsentieren, ich wiederhole es, nicht drei gleichwertige Formen, sondern drei aufsteigende Stufen ebenderselben schöpferischen Funktion: der Selbstdarstellung.

Casanova repräsentiert selbstverständlich nur die erste, die niederste, die primitive Stufe, nämlich die naive Selbstdarstellung, wo ein Mensch noch Leben mit äußerem sinnlichen und faktischen Erleben gleichsetzt und unbefangen Ablauf und Ereignisse dieses seines Daseins berichtet, ohne sie zu werten, ohne sich selbst zu durchforschen.

Mit Stendhal erreicht die Selbstdarstellung schon eine höhere Stufe, die psychologische. Ihr genügt nicht mehr der bloße Bericht, das simple curriculum vitae, sondern das Ich ist auf sich selber neugierig geworden, es beobachtet den Mechanismus seines eigenen Antriebes, es sucht die Motive seiner Handlungen und Unterlassungen, die Dramatik im Seelenraum. Damit beginnt eine neue Perspektive, das Zweiaugensehen des Ich, als Subjekt und Objekt, die Doppelbiographie des Innen und Außen. Der Beobachtende beobachtet sich selber, der Fühlende untersucht sein Gefühl, - nicht nur das weltliche, sondern auch das psychische Leben ist bildnerisch in den Blickraum getreten.

Im Typus Tolstoi erreicht diese seelische Selbstschau dann ihre höchste Stufe dadurch, daß sie gleichzeitig auch ethisch-religiöse Selbstdarstellung wird. Der exakte Beobachter schildert sein Leben, der präzise Psychologe die ausgelösten Reflexe des Gefühls: darüber hinaus aber betrachtet ein neues Element der Selbstschau, nämlich das unerbittliche Auge des Gewissens, jedes Wort auf seine Wahrheit, jede Gesinnung auf ihre Reinheit, jedes Gefühl auf seine fortwirkende Gewalt: die Selbstdarstellung ist über die neugierige Selbstdurchforschung hinaus moralische Selbstprüfung, ein Selbstgericht geworden. Indem er sich darstellt, fragt der Künstler nicht bloß mehr nach Art und Form, sondern auch nach Sinn und Wert seiner irdischen Manifestation.
