Es verlässt die behagliche Wärme des Mutterleibes. Die Welt, in die es kommt, ist voll von grellem Licht, lauter und kälter. Nun muss es selbst atmen und essen. Aber der kleine Mensch ist gut vorbereitet: Schon Monate vorher hat er gelernt, zu schlucken, zu saugen und zu greifen. Alles hat sich zur gegebenen Zeit entwickelt" (Sekretariat der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz, S. 15). Auch für die Mutter ist dieses Ereignis entscheidend. Es wird ihr Leben verändern. Zum ersten Mal hält sie ihr eigenes Kind im Arm. Sie kann es sehen, berühren und begreifen, d.h. sie kann einen direkten Kontakt zu ihm aufnehmen. Während der zurückliegenden Schwangerschaft war dies nur bedingt möglich. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte der Schwangerschaft konnte sie das Kind durch seine Bewegungen und Tritte wahrnehmen. Zuvor spürte sie nur die Veränderung ihres eigenen Körpers. Daher sind gerade in dieser Zeit der Schwangerschaft für die werdende Mutter die Besuche bei ihrem Gynäkologen besonders wichtig. Bei diesen Besuchen erhält sie nicht nur Informationen über die ersten Entwicklungsschritte ihres Kindes, sondern es werden ihr auch verschiedene pränatal diagnostische Untersuchungsmethoden von ihrem Arzt empfohlen, welche "dem Wohle" ihres Kindes dienen sollen. Außer den mittlerweile üblichen Vorsorgeuntersuchungen, wie z.B. Ultraschall, werden den Frauen individuell verschiedene, spezielle zusätzliche pränatale Untersuchungen angeboten, welche zahlreiche Informationen über die vorgeburtliche Entwicklung ihres Kindes vermitteln sollen.
