About the Book

Sunshine peeked through the low hanging clouds, casting a glimmer of light across the city skyline. The wet sidewalks and streets reflected the predawn evidence of the earlier thundershowers. A forecast of sunny weather, along with high winds between 20 to 25 miles per hour, was the latest update at the top of the hour newscast. Bob listened to the car radio as he sat sipping his steamy coffee. Parked down the street near the front entrance of the Goody Hotel. The daily newspaper opened wide, covering the steering wheel. This was a daily routine with Bob, while waiting for a fare. It was 7 AM, and the bustle of the residents was increasing with each passing minute. Steam from the cup of coffee, sitting on the dash, was beginning to fog sections of the windshield. Robert Champion had been a taxi driver for the past 15 years. His limited education, plus a slight stuttering in his speech kept him in his present occupation. An even-tempered man who had recently been divorced after eight-teen years of faithful and dedicated matrimony. One child, born early in the relationship, a son, who just a month ago turned 16. Boyd was fast in becoming more and more to be just like his mother. His interests were mainly in running errands, and doing chores around the house. He didn't seem interested in hanging out with the guys, or in any sport plus he didn't have a girlfriend, unlike other boys his age. Boyd was content being at home, watching TV, or fetching items that his mother would send him after. This type of behavior had Bob quite upset that he wasn't able to change. Some of the guys in school began teasing him, calling him a "Mama's boy" or "Sissy," which didn't seem to bother Boyd. On the other hand, when Bob first heard about the name calling it irritated him. Like most fathers with a son, there were higher expectations about the type of goals set for his only son. But there wasn't much he could do about it to influence the boy, since he had been forced to leave. And his visitation rights only gave him custody every other weekend. Suddenly the back door of the cab opened, and an elderly couple got in and request to be taken to the airport. Bob quickly folded up the newspaper, and then poured his cup of coffee out the window. He got out and loaded their luggage in the trunk. He got back in the cab, reached over and flipped the flag handle of the meter, put the car in gear, looked in the side mirror, then eased into traffic. "How long will it take to get to the airport?" the elderly gentleman asked as Bob was changing lanes so he could make a left turn at the next traffic light. "We should be there in 15 or 20 minutes. Which airline are you taking?" "I think it is Delta, is that right honey?" "Yes our plane leaves at 10:30," she responded. "We are on our way to see our newest granddaughter in Dayton Ohio." There were a few minutes of silence which let Bob concentrate more on his route to the airport, plus give his full attention to the congested traffic that was all around him. "When you stopped at the store did they have any ice cream? You know that new chocolate flavor with almonds and Oreo cookies in it?" he asked his pride. "I never had it on my list, and I had forgotten that you had asked me to get some. Sorry." she responded in a low apologetic voice. "Well, I guess I'll have to go to the store and get it myself" he said in a rather agitated voice. "The list of items that you needed was all that was on my mind. Don't try to make it sound as though I had forgotten it on purpose" she replied rather snappily. There was an eerie silence, as each of them pretended to be preoccupied by looking out the side window, neither would look at each other, as they continue to ignore each other. The cab driver pulled up to the drop-off lane near the terminal. He was sure glad that the bickering between the elderly couple had subsided. "How much is the fare?" the older man asked. "That will be $18.75" the cab driver re
