About the Book

The day was like any other since Steve came to stay with his granny at her small London flat. He was still upset that he hadn't been allowed to go with his parents on the skiing trip in Switzerland. They had just sat down for breakfast when there was a knock on the door. Steve came running when he heard granny's loud anguished cry of "NO!" The next few days were a blur; he couldn't even remember much about his parents' funeral. It was two nights after the funeral that Granny set him down. "Steve my boy, you are going to be moving to live with your dad's mom and brother in America. I'm sorry, but my flat is just too small and I am too old to care for an 11-year-old."Steve Robinson moved to Doremire at a time when there was something troubling the sleepy coastal village. His first friend is a precocious tomboy named Jenny, followed by a quiet boy named Chuck. Steve learns that his dad wanted to be a spy and even helped the police solve crimes when he was a teenager. Now it looks like the police chief is going to get unsolicited help from a mismatched group of preteens. When he arrived in Doremire Steve saw eyes staring back at him from the woods at the edge of the park. "What was that?" He yelled. "What was what?" Uncle Steven asked. "I just saw some creature staring at us from the woods," Steve said."It was probably just a bear," Uncle Steven said. "Which reminds me, bears come down into town sometime so it is not safe to be outside after dark."From the top of the local lighthouse Steve was amazed at how much he could see. "You should be up here during a storm," Jenny said. "Have you ever seen the creature from up here?" Steve asked. "No, but it comes into town and steals stuff." "Like what?" Steve needed to learn as much as he could."How do you know it is a monster and not a person?" Steve asked; he didn't believe in monsters. "There were muddy footprints with bits of seaweed in them," she leaned closer to him. "And one footprint was round!' "O-k-a-y," he said skeptically. What would make a round footprint? After school Jenny, Chuck, and Steve played at the lighthouse. Mist was rolling in from the ocean leaving a wet film on everything. They walked around to where they could see Steve's house on the hill. The wind blew swirls and eddies in the fog that allowed him to see the park for a few seconds before it was swallowed up again. "Hey look!" he pointed."The monster!" Jenny yelled. "Let's see if we can get closer," Steve said. "What if it tries to eat us?" Jenny asked. Chuck looked out, his smile gone. "It's not going to eat us," Steve said. "Come on." They ran down the stairs, out the back door and past Pattie's Pub. The fog thickened again and they couldn't see anything in the park. "Not see," Chuck said. "I don't either," Jenny said. "And, I don't want to get eaten." "We are nothing to get eaten. Wait here, I am going to go over to the play structure," Steve whispered. The fog was getting thicker as he crept closer to the tunnel slide. He didn't see any thing and was about to give up when he saw a movement at the end of the slide. Suddenly, out burst something brown and hairy that roared at him like a bear caught in a trap. Steve jumped back, tripped and landed on his butt; screaming in surprise. The creature had run off into the fog on two legs - and with a limp. Steve scrambled to his feet and ran back to the other two, his heart pounding hard in his chest.Follow the adventures of Steve and his friends as they work to solve the mystery of the "creature" and explore Steve's new home in Doremire.
