La confusión de un hombre llamado Jacinto encontraría el amor en Fernanda, joven hermosa que la vio crecer. Ella también enamorada desde niña de él, pero poco a poco ese amor se desvanecería por el cariño de Eduardo. Jacinto antes de marcharse a las minas ilegales en el Caura le confesaría sus sentimientos. Eduardo regresa de la capital, después de decepcionarse de la atiborrada ciudad en el ajetreo diario y el poder de los políticos dividido en dos bandos, uno por las ideologías y el otro por lo que parece razonable. Sangre derramada en las calles y la impotencia de no poder nada. Jacinto haría lo que tenía que hacer, adentrarse en la minas, hundirse en el barro, salir adelante como lo hizo Calderon, hombre corpulento que trabajó hasta el cansancio para llegar a ser unos de los hombres más poderosos de la selva. Los indicios conocen muy bien esos lares, así como los brasileros, colombianos y guyaneses. Todos quieres un poco de ese tesoro. Las mujeres más bellas, se encuentran por aquellos bares improvisados, en donde no falta el libertinaje. Es la soledad que mata al hombre en la espesa selva, pero Jacinto encontraría el cariño de Teresa; con su sonrisa tierna se sentiría con fuerza para seguir adelante. Dormir con una linterna y un cuchillo en la mano es lo mejor, para que no los roben. Más que eso es la malaria que mata a la gente sin darle tiempo llegar al pueblo. El sol quema lentamente haciendo insoportable salir a las calles. Mientras que las lluvias alborota las plagas. Pican y pican trasmitiendo la mala enfermedad y Jacinto no se salvaría. Agoniza con la venida del gobierno apoderándose de las minas porque también quieren su pedazo de tierra y con ellos los militares quienes apalean a los miserables mineros. Jacinto en la agonía pareciera vivir tal calamidad y es Teresita quien lo consuela, con su amor, su cariño, sus atenciones, con quien pasará el resto de la vida, de una bulla a otra hasta morir si es posible.
