Die Auflage der New York Times steigt seit ihrer Gründung beständig und hat im Jahr 1990 in der Werktagsauflage eine durchschnittliche Auflagenhöhe von etwa einer Million Exemplaren mit einer durchschnittlichen Leserschaft von circa 2 690 000 Personen erreicht. Dieser Leserkreis setzte sich im Gegensatz zu dem vieler anderer Zeitungen in Amerika seit Erscheinen hauptsächlich aus "the very very very top top top" zusammen - Personen mit höherer Schulbildung und hohem Einkommen. In ihrer Untersuchung über das Leseverhalten der Führungsgruppen in den USA fand die Soziologin Carol WEISS heraus, dass die New York Times von allen Printmedien das höchste Ansehen und das meiste Vertrauen genießt. Sie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass ein Großteil der Eliten und der Entscheidungsträger der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika die New York Times liest. Damit nimmt die Times eine Schlüsselposition "im Spannungsfeld von Politik und Wirtschaft, veröffentlichter Meinung und öffentlicher Meinungsbildung ein". Nach dem Selbstverständnis der Times besteht die Aufgabe einer Zeitung darin, umfassende Informationen zur Verfügung zu stellen, einen Meinungs-austausch zwischen der Regierung und dem Volk zu ermöglichen sowie Einfluss auf den politischen Diskurs in der Art und Weise auszuüben, dass die Interessen der Eliten gewahrt und vor allem die Rechte des Volkes nicht verletzt werden. Der Anspruch an Neutralität und Seriosität genießt unter anderen Journalisten eine derart hohe Glaubwürdigkeit, dass "immer dann, wenn Redakteuren und Produzenten bei ihrer Nachrichtenauswahl Zweifel kommen, [...] diese [prüfen], ob die betreffend
