Preferindo dedicar a sua vida principalmente activi dade de escritor, por considerar esta a sua voca��o m�xima e temer o que chama a rotina pedag�gica, Gil berto Freyre tem recusado c�tedras em universidades do seu pais e do estrangeiro. Assim, deixou, em 1942, de aceitar a c�tedra de Filosofia Social, na Universidade de Yale; em 1943, a de Sociologia, na Universidade do Brasil; em 1943, a de Estudos Sociais Brasileiros, na Universidade de Harvard; em 1944, a de Sociologia, na Universidade da Ba�a; em 1949, a de Sociologia, na Universidade do Recife; e, recentemente, convites das Universidades da Calif�rnia, Princeton e Berlim (ocidental). Nem por isso lhe falta, al�m de forma��o universit�ria sistem�tica, experi�ncia did�ctica, pois j� foi lente ou professor extraordin�rio das Universidades de Stanford, Michigan, Indiana, Virg�nia e dirigiu em 1938 um semin�rio para p�s-graduados, na Uni versidade de Col�mbia, sobre Sociologia da Escravid�o. Al�m disso, e' fundador de v�rias c�tedras no Brasil. Gilberto Freyre e' um dos sete membros honor�rios da American Sociological Society. � Membro Titular da Ame rican Anthropological Association e da American Philoso phical Society. Pertence aos Conselhos Directores de: Socie dade Marc Bloch para o Estudo das Civiliza��es com sede em Paris), Instituto Internacional de Civiliza��es Diferen tes com sede em Bruxelas), revista Cahiers lnternationaux de Sociologie (de Paris), revista de Filosofia e Ci�ncias do Homem, Diog�ne (de Paris). Em 1955 foi, � sua revelia, aclamado membro da Academia Pernambucana de Letras. Em 1948, na confer�ncia dos Oito, que reuniu em Paris oito grandes especialistas mundiais em Ci�ncias do Homem, cada um deles representando uma Ci�ncia e uma �rea confer�ncia convocada pela unesco, sem interfer�ncia de governos nacionais, para o fim especial de se estudarem as tens�es entre os grupos humanos, em geral, e os nacio nais, em particular a Antropologia ou a Sociologia Cul tural participou do importante conclave internacional na pessoa de Gilberto Freyre, que recebeu tal delega��o da quele organismo das Na��es Unidas, atrav�s do seu ent�o presidente, o Prof. ]ulian Huxley. Representou ele tamb�m na confer�ncia as �reas n�o - europeias, al�m dos Estados Unidos. Na confer�ncia dos Oito de Paris tomaram parte, al�m de Gilberto Freyre: Georges Gurvitch, professorde Sociologia na Universidade de Paris (sorbonne), Gor don W. Allport, professor de Rela��es Sociais da Univer sidade de Harvard, o Professor Max Horkheimer, da Ale manha, o fil�sofo escandinavo Arne Naess, professor de Filosofia na Universidade de Oslo (noruega), o psic�logo ]ohn Rickman, M. D., Director do British Journal of Medi cal Psychology, de Londres, o psiquiatra Harry Stack Sulli van, M. D., da Washington School of Psychiatry, o econo mista-soci�l�go Alexander Szalai, professor de Sociologia da Economia na Universidade de Budapeste (hungria) e representante dessa especialidade e do ponto de vista da �rea comunista-sovi�tica.
