En la playa de la Barceloneta empieza y termina la estancia de don Quijote en Barcelona. En el último episodio de don Quijote en la ciudad se narra su derrota ante el Caballero de la Blanca Luna y el final de la vida de héroe, despojándose de su armadura y armas y regresando a la Mancha, en donde acontece su definitiva transformación: vuelve a ser Alonso Quijano, un anciano enfermo que fallece en su cama.


Vieron el mar, hasta entonces dellos no visto; parecióles espaciosísimo y largo, harto más que las lagunas de Ruidera, que en la Mancha habían visto.


La Barcelona que conoció Cervantes a principios del siglo XVII era todavía una ciudad amurallada, llena de infinitas callejuelas y misteriosos recovecos. Es muy probable que lo que cautivara a Cervantes fuera la combinación de una atmósfera todavía medieval con el bullicio propio de una ciudad portuaria.

Quizá por esta razón, antes de salir a pasear por primera vez, Cervantes le quita las armaduras y cambia a Rocinante por otro caballo.

Don Quijote no tiene en sus andanzas por la ciudad armaduras, ni caballo. Ello le permite tomar contacto con la realidad de forma más cercana que en otros momentos de la novela.

También su estancia Barcelona permite a don Quijote visitar, por primera y última, vez una imprenta y conocer de cerca cómo se componen y elaboran esos libros que tuvieron tanta importancia a lo largo de su vida.

No es casual que, en el número 14 de la calle del Call, el hidalgo conozca el prestigioso taller y librería de Sebastián Comellas.


Sucedió, pues, que yendo por una calle alzó los ojos don Quijote y vio escrito sobre una puerta, con letras muy grandes: Aquí se imprimen libros, de lo que se contentó mucho, porque hasta entonces no había visto emprenta alguna y deseaba saber cómo fuese. Entró dentro, con todo su acompañamiento, y vio tirar en una parte, corregir en otra, componer en esta, enmendar en aquella, y, finalmente, toda aquella máquina que en las emprentas grandes se muestra.


Al inicio de la visita, se muestra gratamente sorprendido por la calidad del trabajo, hasta que, para disgusto de su autor, descubre que se está corrigiendo el libro Segunda parte del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, polémica obra apócrifa firmada por un tal Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, seudónimo que escondía la verdadera identidad del autor, del que se dice que es natural de Tordesillas. Esta obra falsa disgustó tanto a Cervantes, que aceleró la edición de la segunda parte de su libro para dejar en evidencia el fraude.

El Quijote no llega a Barcelona por azar. Lo hace para desmentir un hecho histórico, y por reacción el personaje de ficción se convierte en un personaje real.

Termina la aventura catalana cuando don Quijote y Sancho vuelven derrotados a su lugar de la Mancha tras el duelo con Caballero de la Blanca Luna. Pero veemos a modo de epílogo a la aventura catalana el apego que don Quijote -y Cervantes- tenían a Barcelona.
