Le Festin de Pierre est une comédie de Molière en cinq actes et en prose dont la Troupe de Monsieur frère unique du roi donna quinze représentations triomphales en février et mars 1665 sur le théâtre de la grande salle du Palais-Royal à Paris. Les premiers éditeurs parisiens de la pièce lui ont donné en 1682 le titre Dom Juan ou le Festin de Pierre, sous lequel elle est connue depuis lors. Elle est également connue sous le titre abrégé Dom Juan (parfois orthographié Don Juan)1.Annoncée et donnée avec pour sous-titre L'Athée foudroyé, elle était, après les tragicomédies en vers de Dorimond (1658) et de Villiers (1659), toutes deux intitulées Le Festin de Pierre ou le Fils criminel, la troisième adaptation française de la légende de Don Juan Tenorio, débauché et impie châtié par le Ciel, à laquelle le moine espagnol Tirso de Molina avait donné, trente-cinq ans plus tôt, une première forme dramatique dans El Burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra (L'Abuseur de Séville et l'Invité de pierre).Elle donne à suivre les trente-six dernières heures de la vie du jeune dom Juan Tenorio, esprit fort et grand amateur de femmes, flanqué tout au long des cinq actes de Sganarelle, valet couard, glouton et friand de disputes intellectuelles. Provocateur impénitent, dom Juan n'échappera pas à la vengeance du Ciel, qui le châtiera par le bras d'une statue de pierre.Le spectacle, où se mêlent tous les registres, du comique farcesque au sérieux, voire au tragique, est accueilli avec enthousiasme par le public parisien, mais fait l'objet d'une violente attaque dans les semaines qui suivent les représentations. Il ne sera jamais repris du vivant de Molière et le texte n'en sera imprimé que dix ans après sa mort. Délaissée jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle au profit de la version en vers que la veuve et les compagnons de Molière avaient commandée à Thomas Corneille en 1676, la pièce fut peu représentée pendant un siècle encore, jusqu'à ce qu'en 1947 et 1953, Louis Jouvet puis Jean Vilar la fassent redécouvrir au grand public. Elle est aujourd'hui considérée, à l'égal du Tartuffe et du Misanthrope, comme l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre de Molière et de la dramaturgie classique française.La place unique qu'elle occupe, par sa singularité formelle, dans la production de son auteur, la singularité de son histoire, la réputation de modernité et de complexité qui lui est faite par ses exégètes depuis une soixantaine d'années (et dont témoigne une très abondante bibliographie critique), l'importance sans cesse croissante que lui accordent les programmes et manuels scolaires, enfin la grande diversité des mises en scène auxquelles elle a donné lieu depuis sa redécouverte, font de cette comédie de l'incrédulité châtiée un des avatars les plus fascinants du mythe de don Juan.
