¿Es la guerra una acción contraria a la razón? Este libro surgió de la primera jornada de reflexión convocada por el Instituto de Humanidades de la Universidad Panamericana (up), en abril de 2022, para abrir una discusión seria entre profesores y alumnos, tanto de la up como de otras universidades, en torno a la guerra, so pretexto de la invasión rusa a Ucrania.


En la primera sección, los autores exploran las causas históricas de la guerra, en clave antropológica y política. Es interesante la aproximación de Saúl y Llovet, quienes posan su mirada en Homero y el pensamiento clásico y, a partir de él, dialogan con la realidad bélica actual. Dicha visión se ve enriquecida por el artículo de Ruiz Velasco, quien se ocupa del tema con base en la reflexión de Álvaro d'Ors.


Los trabajos de los profesores Hernández, Fernández y De Haro componen la segunda sección, en la que se intenta responder a la pregunta sobre las justificaciones morales de la guerra desde tres ópticas enriquecedoras: el control estatal que puede detonarse en aras de la preservación de la salud a propósito de la reciente pandemia, las guerras intestinas que han configurado al México moderno desde el siglo xix hasta ahora y la comprensión antropológica de la violencia en general y de la guerra en particular a partir de René Girard.


Seguidamente, el libro se ocupa de la guerra desde tres momentos concretos de la historia de la filosofía: estoicismo, la escolástica y la escuela de Frankfurt. El diálogo que Ramos-Umaña, Lecón y Coronado sostienen con los autores de los que se ocupan permitirá una mejor comprensión de la guerra en nuestros días, sin perder de vista una preocupación que no pierde vigencia: ¿es posible la paz?


La última sección se aleja un poco más que las anteriores de la coyuntura y aborda el tema de la guerra a partir de la experiencia estética. Literatura y música comparecen ante el conflicto bélico en cuatro capítulos cuya temática gravita en torno a Pedro Páramo, la lectura que Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda hace de Aristóteles, un puntual recorrido musical con base en Platón y una breve exploración de la posibilidad de la belleza en la guerra.


Para finalizar el libro tenemos los capítulos de Abraham Martínez y de Teresa Santiago. El primero se sumerge en la estructura antropológica para descubrir si esa facultad a la que los griegos llamaron thymós, cuya función es aliarse a la razón, pero también llamar a la acción, es la responsable de nuestra naturaleza bélica.


La pretensión de cada uno de los autores es dialogar. La discusión pública actual tiende al reduccionismo y a soluciones irreconciliables. En el diálogo no se busca vencer a nadie, sino comprender mejor las razones del otro y las propias, y así, juntos, intentar encontrar la verdad. Ante la esterilidad de los dogmas arrojadizos, el diálogo siempre es fértil. Así que animamos al lector a dialogar con cada uno de los autores que ofrecen aquí novedosas aportaciones, puntuales y polémicas, sobre el significado de la guerra y su sentido y a participar en la búsqueda de una respuesta a si estamos condenados a guerrear perpetuamente para buscar la paz.
