Nous sommes le vingt juillet 2020. Je viens de mettre le point final à ce livre. Je reste immobile, affalé sur ma chaise, regardant ce gros tas de feuilles noircies. D'où me viennent tous ces mots, alignés comme pour la bataille, comme les centuries romaines recouvrant la terre jusqu'à l'horizon, au garde-à-vous, prêtes à partir à l'assaut ? On me dira, ça vient de ton cerveau. Faudrait-t-il qu'il soit malade, celui-là ! Rien d'étonnant chez quelqu'un qui prétend à devenir octogénaire ! Mais il y a autre chose. Comment se fait-il que j'aie pu formuler tout ça, moi qui ai du mal à aligner trois mots, moi le bègue, l'indécis, le jamais sûr de rien ? C'est fait, il faut passer à autre chose. J'allume la radio. Quelqu'un parle. C'est le ministre de la santé, qui fait le point sur l'épidémie. La voix est hésitante. Il y a de l'angoisse. Beaucoup d'angoisse.
...Nous, je veux dire notre petite famille, n'avons pas échappé à cette terrible situation. Pendant plus de trois mois, nous ne sommes pas sortis de chez nous. En Mai, on décrète la fin très lentement progressive du confinement. Mais pas la fin de la tragédie. Combien de temps faudra-t-il pour revenir à une vie normale, si ce mot a encore un sens ? Y reviendra-t-on jamais de notre vivant ? La peur, la Grand Peur, s'est installée chez tous. Et c'est l'effet le plus terrible de cette catastrophe. Je me dis, prenant un air détaché pour me mystifier moi-même, que je suis devenu ermite, volente o nolente, et que j'appelle ma maison dorénavant l'ermitage .
Et je me suis mis à écrire.

Mais ce qui nous attirait le plus, nous autres gamins, c'était le Conteur de la Koutoubia. Sur l'esplanade, on l'attendait, après la prière de l'après-midi. Le cercle, d'un diamètre de quatre mètres environ, est parfait. Au premier rang les spectateurs assis, dont quelques enfants. Derrière eux deux rangs de spectateurs debout. Un brouhaha parcourt l'assemblée, survolé parfois par une voix haute, tonitruante, un appel, ou une réplique précédant de gros rires. Certains des enfants assis ont sorti leurs billes, et s'amusent chacun à faire de petits carreaux. D'autres leur toupie, essayant d'y déchiffrer le nombre de points . Plus il y en a, moins le joueur est habile. Les adultes parlent, dialectal de Marrakech et Tachelhit du Souss entremêlés, ou négocient, ou marchandent, ou se racontent les dernières nouvelles. Depuis la place Jamaa-L'Fna voisine, on entend les bruits de l'activité frénétique, à peine atténués mais mélangés comme une musique dérèglée, dont l'intensité varie au gré du vent capricieux. On attend tous le conteur magnifique. Enfin il est là. Rares sont ceux qui ont remarqué son arrivée au centre du cercle. Il s'y tient grand, droit, portant la barbe comme une bannière. Il commence par faire la revue de l'auditoire. Au fur et à mesure qu'il tourne sur lui-même, les voix s'apaisent, jusqu'au silence total. Alors, d'une voix profonde, lourde, diction parfaite, il débute par invoquer le Très Haut, tel Homère invoquant les Muses. Son invocation est ponctuée par les amen du public. Et soudain, il décide: Et maintenant, secouez les clés de la réussite. ...
