About the Book

One year after the dead man was dug up and eaten at Onicha Ngwa, Eastern Nigeria, twenty-five-year-old Patti Bryant and her husband, Rees, arrive at the new Bible College with their infant son and little daughter. They are Christian teachers, eager to share the good news they carry in their Bibles and in their hearts. That night, exhausted, they lie wide-eyed under their mosquito net listening to the spine-chilling beating of village drums. The next morning two desperate men appear on a bicycle. The man slumped on the luggage carrier groans in agony. "Please help my brother," the other gasps. Rees rushes them to a distant hospital, but it is too late. The man dies the same day. Soon Patti and Rees become obsessed by the dream of a hospital near their Bible College. In the naïve pursuit of their dream they endure embarrassing failures and maddening frustrations. They also laugh. A lot. Amazingly, the Nigerian Christian Hospital moves from dream to reality before their very eyes. Looking back at those eventful years, Patti traces God's design in it all-his divine choreography
About the Author: Patti Mattox Bryant was born in 1933 in Oklahoma City during the Great Depression. Her devout Christian parents, F. W. and Mildred Mattox, though financially stressed, made Patti feel like a princess. Beginning at the age of nine, she was immersed in the spiritually rich culture of the Harding College community in Searcy, Arkansas, where her father was a Bible professor. At the age of nineteen she graduated from that college, and on the same day married Rees Bryant, a fledgling gospel preacher. Patti and Rees went to Nigeria as missionaries in 1958. Their active involvement in missions spanned the next twenty-six years, including four tours of service in Nigeria and the establishment of a medical missions support organization in America-the African Christian Hospitals Foundation, renamed International Health Care Foundation. Patti served as secretary for that organization for a number of years. Through the years, Patti's roles have varied. She has been an elementary teacher in both public and Christian schools in Arkansas and Texas, and has taught English and Bible in secondary schools in Nigeria. She has taught in the Lubbock State School for the Mentally Retarded, and also a college course at Florida Christian College. Patti has taught ladies' Bible classes and spoken at lectureships and seminars, both in Nigeria and America. However, Patti considers her roles as wife and mother to be her most significant. In 1997, Patti completed a graduate degree in Theology/Philosophy at Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, Illinois, where Rees taught Missions. Patti's work for the M.A. was motivated by a desire to research a topic which had long interested her-the relationship between the Trinity, the image of God, and marriage. Her study produced a thesis entitled The Trinity as a Model for Christian Marriage. Patti and Rees have four children-Sara Jo Dusterhoft, William Rees Bryant, David Mattox Bryant, and Rebecca Layne Howard. They are very proud of their four children, their children's spouses, their eleven grandchildren, and their four great-grandchildren. Patti and Rees celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on June 5, 2012, and currently enjoy retirement in Florida.
