Grundlage von Handlungsempfehlungen ist das Wissen um empirisch abgesicherte Zusammenhänge. Gerade im Bereich der strategischen Unternehmensführung ist ein derartiges Wissen aus der Fülle der einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten jedoch oft nur schwer zu gewinnen. In diese Lücke stößt der Verfasser mit der vorliegenden Arbeit, wenn er die Literatur zu einem Zentralproblern der Strategieforschung, nämlich der Beziehung zwischen "Diversifikation" und "Unternehmenserfolg", einer tiefgreifenden Analyse unterzieht. Er untersucht erstmals, inwieweit die vorhandenen empirischen Studien zu diesem Thema gesicherte wissenschaftliche Aussagen enthalten und damit zur Ableitung von Handlungsempfehlungen dienen können. Dabei kommt mit der Metaanalyse als Verfahren zur quantitativen Zusammenfassung von statistischen Befunden ein für die Betriebswirtschaftslehre neuartiges und zukunftsweisendes Instrument zum Einsatz. Das Ergebnis der Analyse zeigt, daß kein systematischer Einfluß der Diversifikation auf den Unternehmenserfolg besteht. In den betrachteten Studien erklärt die Diversi- fikation nur etwa fünf Prozent der Varianz des Unternehmenserfolgs, wobei sich hinter diesem Durchschnittswert eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher und oft wider- sprüchlicher Befunde verbergen. Im Rahmen seiner Untersuchung geht der Verfasser auch auf inhaltliche und metho- dische Probleme der empirischen Arbeiten ein und unterbreitet Vorschläge zur Modellbildung sowie zur Anwendung statistischer Analyseverfahren. Es wäre zu begrüßen, wenn diese Hinweise von der zukünftigen empirischen Diversifikations- forschung aufgegriffen werden und so zu einer Weiterentwicklung der betriebs- wirtschaftlichen Forschung auf diesem Gebiet führen könnten.
