É um requisito para a implementação da tecnologia do CO2 - geo-armazenamento que o destino a longo prazo do CO2 injectado no subsolo seja compreendido. O aprisionamento da dissolução é conhecido como um processo a longo prazo capaz de reduzir o risco de fuga da fase gasosa do CO2 de um reservatório. Este estudo examina, portanto, a influência do fluxo convectivo impulsionado pelas diferenças de densidade na dissolução do CO2 gasoso no fluido de formação altamente salina. A característica de um potencial reservatório anticlíneo localizado na bacia sedimentar do Norte da Alemanha é utilizada como um estudo de caso. Simulações numéricas de cenários realizados para a secção transversal 2D do reservatório, contabilizando a dissolução do CO2 e, posteriormente, contabilizando os efeitos das reacções geoquímicas (ou seja, dissolução/precipitação mineral). Observa-se que em ambos os cenários a densidade do fluido de formação aumenta e resulta num fluxo convectivo. No primeiro cenário, as quantidades de CO2 dissolvidas no reservatório foram duplicadas devido ao processo de mistura convectiva. Quando tanto a dissolução como os efeitos de reacção geoquímica são considerados, a quantidade de CO2 dissolvido aumentou 116 % em comparação com os resultados do modelo sem a livre convecção.
