La compréhension du devenir à long terme du CO2 injecté dans le sous-sol est une condition préalable à la mise en oeuvre de la technologie de géostockage du CO2. Le piégeage par dissolution est connu comme un processus à long terme capable de réduire le risque de fuite de la phase gazeuse du CO2 d'un réservoir. Cette étude examine donc l'influence de l'écoulement convectif entraîné par les différences de densité sur la dissolution du CO2 gazeux dans le fluide de formation hautement salin. La caractéristique d'un réservoir anticlinal potentiel situé dans le bassin sédimentaire nord-allemand est utilisée comme étude de cas. Des simulations de scénarios numériques ont été réalisées pour la section transversale 2D du réservoir en tenant compte de la dissolution du CO2 et des effets des réactions géochimiques (c'est-à-dire la dissolution/précipitation des minéraux). On observe que dans les deux scénarios, la densité du fluide de formation augmente et entraîne un flux convectif. Dans le premier scénario, les quantités de CO2 dissoutes dans le réservoir ont doublé en raison du processus de mélange convectif. Lorsque les effets de dissolution et de réaction géochimique sont pris en compte, la quantité de CO2 dissous a augmenté de 116 % par rapport aux résultats du modèle sans convection libre.
