About the Book

Excerpt from Diseases of the Respiratory Organs: Being Original Ideas Advanced by a Close Student of Nature and Her Mysteries, on Subjects Which Have Ever Been Full of Perplexity to the Medical Profession

It is possible that the medical profession may regard the publication of this little book as an unwarrantable intrusion upon their own territory. When, however, they consider how widely and for how many ages doctors have differed as to the causes of the complaints herein discussed, they may be willing to excuse a man from the people for stepping in to settle the dispute. The intimate relation which these diseases bear to our mode of life and the sani tary condition of our dwellings has long been known. This relation, universally acknowledged, but imperfectly under stood, has caused the writer deep thought, the result of which is the present treatise.

A physician's only end and aim is too often to effect a cure, not to ascertain first the exact cause of the illness. But people should first be instructed in the causes of dis ease; they will then know how to avoid them. The writer knows nothing of medicine, excepting the remedies that are Nature's own, and has, consequently, avoided all medi cal terms and technical phrases; and while no one could appreciate more highly than he the attainments and ser vices of the members of the medical profession, yet he ventures the opinion that Nature may reveal some of hersecrets of health and disease to an earnest student outside the halls of a medical college perhaps more readily than to one within. It will remain for physicians and scientists, who have the requisite knowledge and the appliances nec essary for further investigation to prove the truth of what is here advanced, and to devise cures for the diseases dis cussed, their causes having been plainly stated.
