Este libro trata sobre la circulación de palabras y de decires en los medios de comunicación, en especial en la prensa gráfica, diaria y nacional. Se interesa menos por el contenido de los acontecimientos aquí considerados que por preguntarse sobre la manera en que estos son tratados, mencionados, relatados y por demostrar la incidencia de las formas de la lengua en "las maneras de decir", las informaciones y las formas de su circulación. Se trata, entonces, de seguir la rastreabilidad de los decires reunidos a propósito de ciertos acontecimientos durante su viaje, a través de los medios y a través de su inscripción en la materialidad de los soportes.
Pero la elección de "la familia de acontecimientos" tomada aquí por ejemplo está vinculada con las formas de su circulación. Se trata de asuntos sociales que giran en torno a la salud, la alimentación y el medio ambiente, y que, desde el caso de la sangre contaminada, tomaron un rumbo político evidente: más allá de sus especificidades científicas o tecnológicas, este viraje les confiere ese "aire de familia", notable en cualquier caso en el tratamiento que los medios de comunicación hacen de ellos. La crisis de la vaca loca, las controversias vueltas recurrentes sobre los OGM, la historia del pollo con dioxina, la polución del aire, la neumonía atípica o, más recientemente, la gripe aviar, se transformaron en acontecimientos científicos o tecnológicos de carácter político y, a lo largo del tiempo, en hechos de memoria colectiva a los cuales apelamos y recordamos, incluso cuando se trata de otras familias de acontecimientos.
