Musikliebhaber greifen immer wieder aktiv in den professionellen Musikbetrieb ein und tragen als Vorstandsmitglieder von Vereinen und Institutionen die Verantwortung fur das stadtische Konzertleben. Beachtliche Fachkenntnisse, gesellschaftlicher Einfluss und der Wunsch, Kontakte mit Kunstlern zu pflegen, sind die Voraussetzungen dafur. Carl Eduard und Marie Burckhardt-Grossmann liebten die Musik, er spielte sehr gut Geige, sie wirkte im Gesangverein mit und trat gelegentlich solistisch auf. Im Hauptberuf war Burckhardt Jurist, aber als Prasident der Allgemeinen Musikgesellschaft (AMG) gestaltete er das Basler Musikleben um 1900 wesentlich mit. Um die Jahrhundertwende unternahm die AMG den Versuch, die Gastgeberpflichten gegenuber den Solisten fur die Dauer von deren Basler Aufenthalten zu institutionalisieren. Die Kommission bestimmte aus ihren eigenen Reihen jeweils einen sogenannten Herrn du jour, der sich der Solisten anzunehmen hatte. Fur das Ehepaar Burckhardt-Grossmann entstanden aus dieser Aufgabe lebenslange Freundschaften mit Ilona Durigo, Edwin Fischer, Stefi Geyer, Joseph Joachim, Maria Philippi, Max Reger, Rudolf Serkin und vielen anderen, die haufig im Hause Burckhardt-Grossmann komfortabel logierten und nicht selten auch auf materielle Unterstutzung zahlen konnten. Solche Kontakte ermoglichten die langerfristigen Bindungen beruhmter Solistinnen und Solisten an die Konzertorganisationen der Stadt und bildeten die Voraussetzung dafur, dass Basel problemlos mit den grossen Musikzentren Europas konkurrieren konnte. Uber 300 Briefe gewahren seltene Einblicke in die privaten Eigenheiten der Kunstler, wie sie sich nach ihren umjubelten Auftritten im familiaren Kreise bei den Apres Concert-Essen offenbarten. Diese Dokumente werden vor dem Hintergrund einer allgemeinen Geschichte des musikalischen Liebhabertums betrachtet und mit Zeugnissen weiterer Basler Musikmazene verglichen, unter ihnen Andreas Heusler, Carl Christoph Bernoulli und Friedrich Riggenbach-Stehlin.
About the Author: Die Autorin Andrea Wiesli, geb. 1978 in Wil SG, studierte Musikwissenschaft an der Universitat Zurich und zugleich Klavier an der Musikhochschule Zurich bei Konstantin Scherbakov. Neben ihrer musikhistorischen Arbeit verfolgt sie eine rege Konzerttatigkeit im In- und Ausland als Solistin und Kammermusikerin.
