Die Möglichkeit der Komprimierung und Übertragung von Musikdateien im Internet ohne signifikanten Qualitätsverlust, das Entstehen von Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerken sowie das Angebot unterschiedlichster mobiler Abspielgeräte hat in den letzten Jahren zu einer starken Nachfrage nach digitaler Musik geführt. In den letzten beiden Jahren hat sich das Onlinemusikgeschäft zu einem bedeutenden Absatzmarkt der Musikindustrie entwickelt. Dem Jahreswirtschaftsbericht der IFPI zufolge ist im Jahr 2005 allein das Downloadvolumen einzelner Musiktitel im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um das zwanzigfache gestiegen. Die Anzahl legitimer Onlinemusikdienste hat sich in den letzten beiden Jahren versechsfacht. Darüber hinaus treten in letzter Zeit vermehrt neue Intermediäre in den Musikmarkt. Es stellt sich jedoch die Frage, ob hinter all diesen Angeboten auch betriebswirtschaftlich fundierte Geschäftsmodelle stecken. Hier setzt die vorliegende Untersuchung auf, die aus einer betriebswirtschaftlichen Perspektive die Erfolgsfaktoren für Onlinemusikdienste darstellt. Nach einer kurzen Einleitung sowie Darstellung von Ziel und Gang der Untersuchung im ersten Kapitel werden im zweiten Kapitel wesentliche grundlegende Aspekte beleuchtet: Die technische Entwicklung des digitalen Musikmarktes (Kap. 2.1), die Veränderungen der Wertschöpfungsstruktur im Musikmarkt (Kap. 2.2), das Digital Rights Management (Kap. 2.3) sowie das Urheberrecht (Kap. 2.4). Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit den unterschiedlichen Anbietern für den Onlinemusikvertrieb und illustriert die verschiedenen Kategorien der Musikdienste. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt findet sich im vierten Kapitel, in dem die Erfolgsfaktoren von Onlinemusikdiensten herausgearbeitet werden.
