Das Ziel ist die theoretische Betrachtung digitaler Medien, ihrer Chancen und Risiken für den Berufsschulunterricht sowie deren Bedeutung für den Lernerfolg von SchülerInnen im Unterricht. Daher werden Untersuchungen wie die Auswertung von Studien oder die Darlegung von Chancen und Problemen zum digitalen Lernen im Unterricht vorgenommen. Im zweiten Kapitel werden die Entwicklungen der Digitalisierung, in der schulischen Bildung sowie der neuen Medien erläutert. Des Weiteren wird die mediale Ausstattung deutscher Schulen auch in Hinblick auf den "DigitalPakt Schule" der Bundesregierung dargelegt. Insgesamt liefert dieses Kapitel ein reales Bild an Möglichkeiten und Problemen hinsichtlich der Nutzung von digitalen Medien. Die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse liefern die Basis für den empirischen Teil in Kapitel vier. Im Anschluss wird auf die beim Umgang mit neuen Medien benötigte Medienkompetenz eingegangen und diese erläutert. In diesem Zusammenhang soll gezeigt werden, welche Rolle der Begriff 'Medienkompetenz' beim medialen Einsatz spielt. Außerdem wird dargelegt, was genau Kompetenzen sind und wie diese legitimiert werden. Die Digitalisierung durchdringt alle Lebensbereiche und ist präsenter denn je. Durch die rapiden Entwicklungen innovativer Technologien, wie Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien in der Gesellschaft und der Arbeitswelt nimmt auch die Bedeutung der digitalen Medien in der Schule zu. Im öffentlichen Diskurs existieren unterschiedliche Meinungen zur Umsetzung digitaler Medien im Unterricht.
