About the Book

The book rightly fills the urgently needed void in the interaction between population and development by providing essential information on the role of population parameters in total development of the two largest countries, viz. China and India. The perspectives on policy, data on characteristics of population, fertility, mortality, demographic transition and differential rate of success in family planning, and population growth are the major topics covered. The book is divided into four parts comprising 21 chapters. The papers have been contributed by the well known experts in the respective fields and countries. It is a fitting deviation from the narrow discussion of demographic exercise and indeed in tune with the appropriate future requirements in population stabilisation for expeditious total development. The first part of this book discusses on contemporary popu-lation policy and control programmes. It is followed by the presentation of diverse characteristics of population and highlights on the dynamics of fertility and mortality. At the end, it provides a comprehensive coverage of population and development on a historical basis which meets the long felt need of a large spectrum of academicians and policy makers. The essays provided in the book meet the requirements of demographers, development administrators, welfare agencies, economists, behavioural scientists, health-educators and policy makers in government and voluntary agencies. Indeed the successful and rapid demographic transition of China as against the stagnating but differential performance of the same process from Indian states form the highlight of this volume. In fact it delineates the appropriate dimensions of development that effects the differential success in stabilisation of population in two largest countries of the world. The lessons of Chinese and Indian experiments in population control and improvement in quality of life of population in the context of their complex ecological regions and diverse communities will be a valuable reference material for the entire world.
