Para saber cómo funciona la mente, no podemos hacer nada mejor que recurrir a los escritores antiguos sobre lo que se llama yoga, y observar todas las principales escuelas antiguas de yoga, no solo una o dos de ellas. De estas, hay siete escuelas bien conocidas que sobreviven en la India hoy en día, y además de estas, nuestra revisión del ocultismo oriental estaría incompleta sin una alusión a otras tres: los sufíes persas, el "camino noble" budista y el zen chino y japonés. En total hay diez escuelas. ¿Por qué asociamos inicialmente la palabra yoga con el ocultismo? Porque el yoga es la práctica de poderes ocultos, o más bien el descubrimiento y uso de esos poderes que residen invisiblemente en las profundidades de la mente humana. La práctica podría comenzar con la fórmula "Solo estamos parcialmente vivos", y desde ese punto de vista proceder a investigar la Psicología Interior de los antiguos, que según ellos los unía - '' yoga '' significa '' unión '' - con posibilidades latentes y realidades invisibles y más allá de la mente. Que la magia existe es cierto, y hay una larga lista de "poderes psíquicos" que se manifiestan en diversos grados y de forma bastante natural a medida que avanza el proceso del yoga, pero los profesores en su mayoría hablan de ella como algo de poco valor y desaconsejan hacer la mente un "patio de recreo" para ellos. Pero los verdaderos yoguis no están interesados en estos poderes. Están interesados en dominar el medio ambiente, encontrar las fortalezas, las experiencias éticas y espirituales que no solo son inmaduras, sino positivamente infantiles en la mayoría de las personas. Se preguntará " ¿Por qué estos hombres perfectos no usan poderes superiores y magia? "La respuesta es: " Lo hacen. Los usan constantemente, pero no los muestran, porque saben que mucha gente se vería tentada, por el espejismo de estas facultades y poderes, a desviarse del curso regular de su evolución. Y muchos simplemente los usarían como otro medio adicional de explotar a sus semejantes ". Así que comencemos con la afirmación de que las siete variedades bien conocidas de práctica de yoga entre los hindúes se pueden enumerar de la siguiente manera: 1. Raja Yoga de Patanjali; 2. Karma y Buddhi Yoga de Shri Krishna; 3. Gnyana Yoga de Shri Shankaracharya; 4. Hatha Yoga; 5. Laya Yoga; 6. Bhakti Yoga; 7. Mantra Yoga. Estos siete sistemas se pueden clasificar en dos grupos: i los tres primeros son considerada una variedad de Raja Yoga, y los últimos cuatro como variedades de Hatha Yoga. El adjetivo "raja" significa "real", porque el hombre se convierte en rey o dueño de sus propias facultades.
