Sie zeigt, dass die unterschiedlichen Kulturtypen sich in ihren Moglichkeiten unterscheiden, eine nachhaltige Zivilisation hervorzubringen. Auch der schockhafte Einbruch einer verdrangten Wirklichkeit fuhrt nicht automatisch dazu, die Dominanz kurzfristiger Rationalitat aufzugeben -- und das zu tun, was langfristig vernunftig ware. Er bietet lediglich die Chance auf einen in die Zukunft gerichteten Lernprozess. Zwei Fenster zur Zukunft scheinen sich zu offnen. Kann der Mensch durch Gentechnik verbessert werden? Kann Politik Gestaltungskraft zuruckgewinnen? Der Mensch wird seine Zukunft angesichts der globalen Herausforderungen nur meistern, wenn die Hoffnung auf seine Lernfahigkeit nicht vergebens ist -- und damit die Hoffnung, dass er die Richtung seines Denkens andern kann.
