Die alten Romer handelten (so Karl Philipp Moritz, frei nach Ovid) religios richtig, indem sie mit der Zeit gingen, sich am Zyklus der Kulte und Festzuge orientierten. Zeitfromm ist heute - in einer grenzenlos vernetzten Welt, wo Prozessoren und Maschinen permanent in Betrieb sind - die Pietat gegenuber althergebrachten Sonderzeiten, erst recht aber der Glaube an die ultimative Gerichtsbarkeit von Terminen und deadlines. Der Umstand, dass es Zeit 'gibt', wird in antiken Mythen als erklarungsbedurftiges Wunder behandelt und auf ein kosmisches Theater der Gotter zuruckgefuhrt. Auch in Gedichten, Liedern, Dramen und Erzahlungen vergeht Zeit; dies meist in einer sorgfaltig angeordneten Weise, als wohlgeformte, in sich gegliederte Abfolge. Die Lyrik akzentuiert das saisonale Wechselspiel der Elemente und Temperaturen, das Drama die handlungsentscheidende Funktion des Augenblicks, und im Roman kommt zutage, wie unterschiedlich gleiche Zeitstrecken erlebt oder genutzt werden. Dieses Buch stellt Texte und Motivzusammenhange vor, in denen die Zeit selbst im Vordergrund steht und in ihrer Mannigfaltigkeit zu Wort kommt. Die Studie setzt vor 1800 ein mit jener doppelten Neugrundung astronomischer und gesellschaftlicher Zeit, die durch den franzosischen Revolutionskalender angestossen und dann flankiert wurde von einer naturpoetischen Asthetik des Jahreslaufs (Rousseau, Schiller, Holderlin). Relativiert ist dadurch die kanonische Autoritat des Kirchenjahres, dessen seelsorgerische Programmatik in Droste-Hulshoffs Geistlichem Jahr noch einmal zur existentiellen Entfaltung gelangt. Schon aber treibt Buchners Dramatik die melancholische und die komodiantische Seite eines durch Arbeit entleerten Daseins hervor. In der Moderne sind es die widerstreitenden Krafte von langer Dauer und Plotzlichkeit (Thomas Mann), von archaischer Elementarzeit und Uhrenkunst (Ernst Junger), die an den grossen Zeitstrom unterhalb des Wechsels gesellschaftlicher Ordnungen erinnern, zuletzt in der Wiederkehr des Kalendererzahlers am Schnittpunkt von historischer Dokumentation und politischer Einbildungskraft (Alexander Kluge). Ein Buch uber die Zeit als den Taktgeber der Literatur und des kulturellen Lebens. Es reflektiert in intensiven Auseinandersetzungen mit poetischen Werken das menschliche Bedurfnis, sich in gemeinsamen Rhythmen zu bewegen und zugleich darin die Zeitlichkeit einer je eigenen Geschichte zu erfahren.
