Nahrung suchen und gemeinsame Nachtruhe halten. Die h�chsten Baume des Urwaldes in ihrem Wohngebiet w�hlen sie als Schlafpl�tze und ver einigen sieh hier allabendlich. Aus verschiedenen Richtungen fliegen um Sonnenuntergang gr�ssere und kleinere Trupps heran, so dass die Anzahl der endlich versammelten V�gel oft viele Hunderte erreicht. Solche Schlaf pl�tze werden bald bemerkbar. Weithin schallt durch die Gegend das Ge kr�chz der ankommenden und aufb�umenden V�gel, das erst mit Eintritt der Dunkelheit verstummt. Am n�chsten Morgen erhebt es sich von neuem und ver k�ndet jetzt den allgemeinen Aufbruch. Fortw�hrend l�rmend, kr�chzend und kreischend, ziehen die Graupapageien dem Binnenlande zu, um sich in den auf den Hochebenen angelegten Maisfeldern der Neger g�tlich zu thun. Halbreifer Mais ist ihre Lieblingsnahrung, und erschreckend sind die Verheerungen, die sie. In den Feldern anrichten. Gegen Sonnenuntergang erst treten sie. Den R�ckzug an, um sich wieder auf ihren Schlafpl�tzen zu versammeln. Bei diesen regelm�ssigen Streif und Raubz�gen halten sie stets dieselben Zugstrassen ein, solange sie auf diesen nicht beunruhigt werden. Ich be nutzte solche bald erkundeten Wechsel zum Anstand, um der K�che aufzu helfen, konnte jedoch denselben Platz niemals l�ngere Zeit behaupten, weil die klugen V�gel sich die betreffenden Stellen bald merkten und in weitem Bogen umflogen. Der Flug der Graupapageien ist erb�rmlich. Mit kurzen, schnellen Fl�gelsehl�gen streben sie in gerader Richtung ihrem Ziele zu. Es hat den Anschein, als �ngstigten sie sich in der Luft und f�rchteten jeden Augenblick herabzufallen. Als ich zum erstenmal in der Ferne fliegende Graupapageien bemerkte, glaubte ich Enten zu sehen, denn deren Flug �hnelt der ihrige wegen der schnellen Fl�gelschl�ge. Ein Schuss bringt die fliegenden Papageien vollst�ndig ausser Fassung, sie st�rzen, auch unverwundet, nach dem Knalle, oft f�rmlich sich �berschlagend, tief herab und erheben sich erst langsam wieder. Lautes Kr�chzen, wie sie es sonst nur angesichts eines sie bedrohenden Raubvogels ausstossen, verr�t ihre Angst. Schreckhaft zeigen sie sich �berhaupt bei jedem ungew�hnlichen Ereignis. Die Graupapageien br�ten in Baumh�hlen und sollen bis zu 5 reinweisse Eier legen. Unter den gefiederten R�ubern scheint namentlich der Geierseeadler (gypo/zz'emx arzgo/ezzsz's) ein gef�hrlicher Feind der Grau papageien zu sein. Ich sah ihn mehrfach Papageien verfolgen und erkannte an deren An'gstgeschrei, wie sehr sie diesen Raubvogel f�rchteten. Dass der Geierseeadler, trotzdem er kein gewandter Flugk�nstler ist, die unge schickten Flieger einzuholen und zu �berw�ltigen vermag, unterliegt keinem Zweifel. Die Graupapageien werden von den Negern jung ausdem Neste genommen. Im Binnenlande sammeln die H�uptlinge und vornehmen Be wohner der Negerd�rfer die jungen V�gel auf, die sie nach und nach er langen, um sie sp�ter in gr�sserer Anzahl gleichzeitig zur Kuste zum Ver kauf zu bringen. Inzwischen lassen sie die Tiere mit beschnittenen Flugeln frei umherlaufen. Man sieht daher oft die Papageien in den D�rfern auf den Strohd�chern der H�tten oder auf B�umen, die f�r sie vor den H�tten aufgerichtet sind, nach Art unserer Haustauben sitzen. (rchw.)
