About the Book

English summary: The case of the Neo-Assyrian Empire represents one of the most striking turning points in the history of the ancient Mesopotamia. Previously, reports from northern Mesopotamia and the archaeological dates concerning this time period derived from them did not provide extensive information. With a new, archaeologically and stratigraphically oriented method of evaluation, as well as a component-specific method of architectural analysis, all of the archaeological and architectural finds of the Red House excavated between 1992 and 2010 were reconstructed in a deposition history as well as a history of the sites building and settlement. This extensive building has 85 rooms and 5 inner courts and is part of the archaeological site at Tell Sheik Hamad/Dur-Katlimmu, located in modern northeastern Syria, built in the time of the Assyrian king Assurbanipal (668-631 B.C.) and continued to the era of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II in the middle of the fifth century B.C., the phase of the Achaemenid hegemony over the Near East. The building was continually occupied over the course of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, before it fell victim to a devastating fire, and thereafter, the people made part of the building habitable and lived in the ruin of a previously elite residence. The book by Florian Janoscha Kreppner and Jochen Schmid is devoted to the documentation and systematic evaluation of all remains and architectural ruins from the excavation site. The study is concerned with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the remains and the process of their formation, which includes detailed architectural analysis of the buildings, analysis of the context of all 750 written fragments as well as a context-sensitive evaluation of charcoal remains.
