About the Book

English summary: Using the example of the Oaths of Strasbourg, which was published and distributed in the form of numerous prints during the early modern period, this study based around the history of science and discourse reveals forgotten 'pre-' and 'early-Germanic' strategies of knowledge construction. It claims - according to the theory - that during the 17th and early 18th century such academic findings were not (only) explicitly communicated, but were mostly developed and communicated implicitly in the form of a particular kind of early modern philological 'reasoning', in which the knowledge gained was almost never explicitly put into words. Precise placing of the documents in their historical context shows that such philology is to be understood as a form of controversial interference in the events of the time: work on the Oaths of Strasbourg repeatedly turns out to be a decisive confessional statement or political act as far as the internal affairs of the Holy Roman Empire and its relationship to France are concerned. This volume illuminates an unknown area of Franco-German relations as well as of the literature and cultural history of Southern Germany, especially Bavaria.
