Es handelt sich um eine Reise mit einem Automobil nach Angkor im Jahre 1908, die von zwei jungen Söhnen Pariser Familien (Le Duc de Montpensier und Gustave de Bernis) unternommen wurde. Das betreffende Automobil? "Stellen Sie es sich in Gedanken vor (was übrigens keiner sehr großen Anstrengung bedarf!), einen guten 24/30 PS Lorraine Diétrich mit extra verstärktem amerikanischen Rahmen und mit enormen Federpaketen versehen, um das Gesamtgewicht von 3700 Kilogramm und vor allem, die Schocks, die Stöße, die Erschütterungen und die hunderttausend Kränkungen, die für uns die berühmten Ochsenkarrenpfade bereithalten, zu tragen", schreibt der Autor, der Herzog von Montpensier. Er fügt hinzu: "Die Karosserie, ein Doppeltes sehr kurzes Phaéton (um hinten Platz zu machen für zwei Koffer, vier zusammenfaltbare Betten, vier Ersatzreifen und das unentbehrliche Zelt), nur eine Seite mit Tür, die andere Seite dient als Stellplatz für MunitionsBehälter; auf dem rechten Trittbrett, eine große Winde mit 40 Metern Kabel aus Stahl, um das Automobil aus dem Schlamm zu ziehen oder ein steiles Gefälle hinaufzuklettern" usw. Kurz gesagt scheint alles sehr gut vorbereitet worden zu sein. Die Reise wird jedoch vor ihrem triumphalen Eintreffen in Angkor auf unglaubliche Schwierigkeiten stoßen. Die vorliegende Ausgabe enthält die französische Originalausgabe von "La Ville au Bois dormant" neben der deutschen Übersetzung.
About the Author: Duc de Montpensier, Ferdinand François d'Orléans * 09.09.1884, + 30.01.1924 Angaben zur Person: Ferdinand François Philippe Marie Laurent d'Orléans, duc de Montpensier wurde am 9. September 1884 auf Schloss Eu in Eu geboren. Nach seinem Studium an der University of Cambridge ging er auf ausgedehnte Reisen, unter anderem in Brasilien, Japan, Borneo, Indien und Französisch Indochina. Seine Eindrücke über Land und Leute schrieb er in seinen Reiseberichten nieder und veröffentlichte sie später. 1910 entstand "La ville au bois dormant, de Saigon à Angkor en automobile" und 1912 folgten "En Indochine" und "Mes chasses, mes voyages". Ferdinand d'Orléans war passionierter Jäger und ein begeisterter Anhänger der Thesen des Naturforschers Charles Darwin. Er starb an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts am 30. Januar 1924 auf Schloss Randan in Randan - ihm wurde nachgesagt, dass er mit Drogen experimentierte.
