Trotz einer Vielzahl von Untersuchungen des in sich zusammenhangenden Komplexes aus L'art pour l'art, Decadence, Asthetizismus, Fin de siecle etc. fehlt bis heute eine umfassende Untersuchung, die die Vorstellungen, Begriffe und Bilder samt dem wissenschafts- und geistesgeschichtlichen sowie gesellschaftlichen Kontext anhand zeitgenossischer, in erster Linie franzosischer, Quellen paradigmatisch aufbereitet. Sie wird hier, auf der Basis jahrzehntelanger Studien, vorgelegt. Der Autor, Ancien Eleve de l'Ecole Normale Superieure, Docteur des lettres (Sorbonne), beschloss seine Universitatslaufbahn als Professeur honoraire der Faculte des lettres in Strasbourg und Ordinarius fur Neuere Deutsche und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Universitat Munchen. Die Vertrautheit des Komparatisten mit anderen europaischen Literaturen gab ihm die Moglichkeit, gerade die Paradoxie des Phanomens von seinen Wurzeln her und in der historischen Entfaltung aufzuzeigen. Die Provokation bestand im 19. Jahrhundert darin, dass die bislang verschrienen Verfallsepochen - in primis die romische - als Quell absoluter Schonheit entdeckt wurden. Tradierte historische und asthetische Topoi erfuhren einen grundlegenden Bedeutungswandel, oft in direkter Umkehrung der bisherigen Wertungen - so hat Flaubert Nero als den grossten Dichter gepriesen, und Heine oder Mallarme verklarten die Teufelin Herodias-Salome. Was in der Natur als gefahrlich und hasslich gemieden worden war, Orte organischer Dekomposition wie etwa Sumpfe, reizte die Poeten zur Entwicklung einer Asthetik des Verfalls, einer Dialektik von Schonheit und Morbiditat. So wird das Treibhaus, wo hybride Natur und Kunstlichkeit vereint sind, zur beliebten Metapher, und die belles fievres aus den Lagunen Venedigs sorgen u.a bei D'Annunzio und Thomas Mann fur korperliche wie seelische Verwirrung. Doch folgte der Verklarung der Verfallssymptome unvermeidlich die ironische und parodistische Behandlung der nur kurze Zeit elitaren, alsbald schon modisch trivialisierten Themen. Die scharfste Ablehnung der Verklarung des Verfalls ging dann jedoch mit medizinischen und politischen Implikationen einher. Die decadence geriet in die Nahe der zu bekampfenden degenerescence, der Entartung Nordaus und der Romanciers, die wie C. Mendes, Peladan, Rachilde, Lorrain usw. sich auf die Behandlung erotisch-pathologischer Falle spezialisierten. Wahrend aber um 1880 decadence sowie decadent zu Modewortern wurden und auch ausserhalb Frankreichs Anklang fanden, kehrten sich wichtige Autoren von der mit ihnen bezeichneten Tendenz ab. Huysmans, Bourget, Barres fanden zuruck zu den traditionellen katholisch-patriotischen Werten, wahrend sich die Auslander, die eine Zeitlang mit der Decadence kokettiert hatten - Wilde wie D'Annunzio, Nietzsche wie Hofmannsthal und Altenberg - jeder auf seine Weise um deren Uberwindung bemuhten. Ihre endgultige Verdammung erfuhr die decadence durch Leo Tolstoi.
