Die Untersuchungen der mittelalterlichen Liebesdichtung von den Provenzalen bis zu Petrarca zeigen, inwieweit zentrale Gedichte bekannter Autoren vom 11. bis zum 14. Jahrhundert an überindividuelle Sprechweisen der Epoche angeschlossen sind und inwieweit der Wandel innerhalb der literarischen Reihe Veränderungen im Gefüge der zeitgenössischen Episteme Rechnung trägt. Verfolgt wird an Liedern der altokzitanischen Trobadordichtung des 12. und des beginnenden 13. Jahrhunderts sowie an altitalienischen Texten aus dem 13. und 14. Jahrhundert (insbesondere Giacomo da Lentinis, Dantes und Petrarcas), wie sich ein lyrisches Subjekt herausbildet, das das Wissen der Zeit reflektiert und damit in der Lage ist, seine eigene Rolle zu hinterfragen. Systematisch erfaßt werden die zentralen Etappen, auf denen der Diskurs der Liebesdichtung jeweils seine Funktion verändert: Aus der anfänglichen Gebundenheit lyrischen Sprechens an die Situation des Liebeswerbens löst sich allmählich eine lyrische Grundsituation heraus, in der das sprechende Subjekt die ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Diskursschemata entgrenzt und über sie verfügt. Auf jeder Etappe dieser Entwicklung setzt sich die Dichtung dezidiert mit den zentralen Epistemen der dominanten Diskurse, insbesondere der Theologie und der Philosophie, auseinander.
