Ihre Mutter ist auf einer Geschaftsreise und sie will beweisen, dass sie alleine zurechtkommt. Zwar lasst sie den Schmarotzer schnellstens entfernen, doch die Salbe, die ihr die Arztin mitgibt, hat seltsame Nebenwirkungen. Zoe sieht Seifenblasen durch Glasscheiben fliegen und Menschen, die sich in Vogel verwandeln. Zunachst bleibt sie gelassen, aber dann schießt die Physiklehrerin schwer verletzt aus dem Luftungsschacht der Bibliothek hinaus, eingesponnen in einem Kokon. Mit letzter Kraft schickt sie Zoe auf die Suche nach dem Aitialith, einem Bernstein, der Allwissenheit verleihen soll. Machtige Gotter versuchen, ihn an sich zu bringen. Ihre Handlanger, die Trickster Hermes und Loki, sind Zoe und Felix dicht auf den Fersen. Unaufhaltsam werden die beiden in ein mythisches Gespinst aus Machtgier und Rache verstrickt.Zoe fuhlt sich ihrem ubermachtigen Umfeld hilflos ausgeliefert. Auf einmal kann sie mit den Handen horen und mit der Haut schmecken. Nachts spinnt sie Netze an die Zimmerdecke. Allnachtliche Albtraume, eine schwere Erkrankung und der Schulstress fuhren sie an den Rand ihrer Krafte. Hilfe erhalten die beiden von der agyptischen Schutzgottin Selket, Odins Raben Hugin und Munin sowie dem griechischen Feuergott Hephaistos. Ein Gerucht fuhrt sie schließlich zu den Moiren, doch die uberheblichen Schicksalsgottinnen weisen sie ab. Als sie am Ratsel der Sphinx scheitern und von Riesenspinnen gejagt werden, droht Zoes Wille endgultig zu zerbrechen. Nur Felix’ unerschutterliche Zuversicht halt sie aufrecht.***In die Geschichte uber die Entstehung der Welt, die alten Gotter und das Schicksal ist das Wissen verschiedener Fachgebiete eingewoben.
