About the Book

English summary: This volume deals with 109 bronze and iron arrowheads from the archaeological site at Tell Sheikh Hamad in northeastern Syria on the east bank of Khabur River, which has been identified with the Assyrian city of Dur-Katlimmu. Their precise stratigraphic assignment has been determined according to written sources, so that in some cases a date can be determined that is accurate to the decade. There are three epochs in total to which these arrowheads have been assigned: the Middle Assyrian Period in the second half of the second millennium B.C.E, the new Assyrian Period on the first half of the first millennium B.C.E., and the Parthian-Roman period (200 B.C.E. to 250 C.E.) It is noteworthy that among the arrowheads of the Middle Assyrian Period there are already examples of iron being used and a Middle Assyrian Text of the late 13th century B.C.E from Tell Sheikh Hamad confirms the production of arrowheads from iron in that period. Among the arrowheads from the first millennium, the appearance of "Scythian" arrowheads is particularly interesting because they confirm for the first time a more complete range of diffusion for that style of arrowhead. These finds have been discussed in the scholarly literature as witnesses to the military conflicts between the war-bands of horse-mounted nomads. This one-sided interpretation is contrasted with a mix of political and marriage alliances that appear in the written sources. The material evidence from Tell Sheikh Hamad indicates that prestigious gifts were obtained within the space of peaceful political interactions, in which objects, persons, and information were also able to be exchanged and diffused among various social levels.
