About the Book

English summary: Between 1978 and 2008, the excavations in the small northwestern town of Tell Sheikh Hamad in Syria have yielded over 1500 glyphic finds (seals, sealed texts, and clay seals) with over 500 different images. On the basis of stratigraphic analysis of the site in relationship to the stratigraphic sequence of the town, the objects can be dated from the Neo-Assyrian period (10th/9th century B.C.) to the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in the Achaemenid period (5th century B.C.) Anja Fugert first orients the glyphic finding in their depositions context and evaluates the material on the basis of their function and chronology, considers themes and motifs in the images, and merges the findings into a synthesis, which offers new information about the economy and administration of the ancient city. One surprising result is that, despite the political gap that occurred with the disruption of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the transition to the Neo- Babylonian Empire, there remained continuity in a glyphic corpus. The glyphic material now enables archaeologists to identify socio-economic changes. The analysis of the largest Iron Age body of material from a northern Mesopotamian source signifies the importance, and until now unknown role, which the seal played in the administration of the private, upper-class circles of society. Through the stratigraphic orientation of gem carvings, the find also indicates the re-introduction of stamp seals in Mesopotamia in the late 9th century B.C., a century earlier than previously thought.
