About the Book

Karl Ristikivi (1912–1977) wurde als Sohn einer Dienstmagd in Uue-Varbla, Livland, geboren. Nach der Grundschule in Varbla besuchte er bis 1930 eine Handelsschule in Tallinn (damals Reval) und studierte anschließend Geographie an der Universitat in Tartu. Nebenbei schrieb er Geschichten und Erzahlungen, die in estnischen Zeitungen veroffentlicht wurden. Bekannt wurde er durch seine Kinderbucher und Familienromane, die als »Tallinner Trilogie« zusammengefasst werden konnen. Wahrend der zweiten sowjetischen Besetzung 1944 floh Ristikivi aus seinem Heimatland nach Schweden und lebte dort als Exilschriftsteller bis zu seinem Tod 1977. Er schrieb weiterhin Prosa und Romane und schloss mit dem 1953 erschienenen Roman »Die Nacht der Seelen« an die literarische westliche Moderne an. »Die Nacht der Seelen« erschien 1953, ein existenzialistischer Exilroman mit surrealistischen Zugen, der seine personliche Lebenssituation aufgreift. Der Ich-Erzahler, Ristikivis Alter Ego, betritt in der Silvesternacht ein offenstehendes Haus aus Neugier und in der Erwartung, dort Gesellschaft und Unterhaltung zu finden. Schnell wird aber klar, dass der Weg immer tiefer in das Haus hinein auch ein Weg in das eigene Innere, in die eigene Geschichte ist. Plotzlich fallt der Strom aus – es muss ein Verbrechen passiert sein. Der Prozess, der anschließend abgehalten wird, fokussiert aber gar nicht so sehr das mogliche Verbrechen, sondern richtet den Blick vielmehr auf das Menschenleben an sich und die Verfehlungen des Ich-Erzahlers im Besonderen. Meisterhaft versteht es Ristikivi, uns Leser mit Spannung und einer existenziellen Verunsicherung wie den Protagonisten immer tiefer in das Buch hineinzufuhren. Von Raum zu Raum, von Szenerie zu Szenerie, von Begegnung zu Begegnung wandeln wir durch das ratselhafte Haus und kommen doch nur bei uns selbst an. »Die Nacht der Seelen« ist ein widerspenstiger und tiefgreifender Roman uber eine existenzielle Einsamkeit, aber auch ein Buch uber das Schreiben, die Kunst und uber die Schopfungskraft der Phantasie. Maximilian Murmanns Ubersetzung legt mit klarer und praziser Sprache den Blick auf einen Text frei, der alles zeigt und freimutig erzahlt und der uns Leser dennoch wie ein scharfkantig funkelnder Spiegel auf uns selbst zuruckwirft.
