Albert war nicht nur Philosoph und Theolog, sondern, soweit man dar�ber von jener Zeit sprechen darf, auch Naturforscher, und auf allen drei Gebieten einer der frucht barsten Schriftsteller, die je gelebt haben. Bei allen An forderungen, die sein unruhiges Leben im vielfachen Dienste der Kirche und Wissenschaft an ihn stellte, ist es ihm doch m�glich gewesen, eine geradezu erstaunliche Massevon Schriften zu verfassen, die in ihrer Gesamtheit eine kleine Bibliothek im Mittelalter bedeuten mochten. Zu diesen wissenschaftlichen Vorz�gen gesellte sich nun noch ein Lebenswandel in ernster Pfiichttreue und. Tugendiibung, der die Blicke seiner Zeitgenossen mit bewundernder An erkennung auf seiner Gestalt ruhen liess. Auf Albert mehr wie auf irgend einen anderen passen seine eigenen, im Kommentar zur nikomachischen Ethik ge�usserten - Worte: "ein Mann empfiehlt sich durch seinen Namen, seine Wissen schaft und das Verdienst seiner Tugend. Die Bedeutung Alberts war schon bei seinen Zeitgenossen unangefochten; man schmuckte seinen Namen mit dem Zusatz Magnus, man nannte ihn den Dr. Universalis' man pries seine Tugend. Aber auch bei der Nachwelt ist das Interesse an diesem Manne und seinen Werken wach geblieben. Wenn bis heute die Arbeiten moderner Gelehrten �ber Albert noch nicht seh1 zahlreich sind, so ist der Grund dafiir nicht weit zu suchen. Die Besch�ftigung mit der Scholastik ist nach Art und Beschaffenheit der Quellen eine zeitraubende, muhevolle und schliesslich doch wenig dankbare, so dass die im Verh�ltnis zu den anderen Perioden der Philosophie geringe Anzahl der Schriftsteller auf diesem Gebiete nicht weiter auff�llt. Dennoch besitzen wir bereits eine Anzahl Werke, die wenigstens in einigen Punkten uns die Gestalt Alberts n�her rucken. Sein Leben ist namentlich von Sig hart, v. Bertling und einem Anonymus betrachtet, seine schriftstellerische Th�.tigkeit nach verschiedenen Gesichts punkten Von vl Bertling, Bach, J o�l, Endries, v. Weddingen u. A. Untersucht worden. Zu diesen monographischen Dar stellungen kommen dann noch die bekannten umfassenden Geschichtswerke, die im Zusammenhange der historischen Entwicklung auch den einzelnen an seinem Orte ber�ck sichtigen die kirchengeschichtlichen Arbeiten von Schroeckh, Kurz u. A., die Geschichten der Philosophie von Ritter, Erdmann, Ueberweg Heinze, St�ckl u. A., die Geschichten einzelner Disciplinen, z. B. Der Logik (prantl), der Ethik (st�udlin' Gass, Luthardt, Ziegler), der Psychologie (siebeck), der Botanik (meyer).
