Ritzer, 1940 geboren, suchte nach einem modernen, zeitgemäßen Begriff für die Theorie des deutschen Soziologen Max Weber vom formalen Rationalismus und seiner höchstentwickelten Form der Bürokratie. Zu Beginn der 80er Jahre stellte Ritzer dann die Theorie Webers mit den sich rasant ausbreitenden Filialen der Fast- Food- Industrie in Verbindung. Dabei fragte er sich mit Besorgnis nach den Ursachen, die die Ausbreitung derart beschleunigten. Er stellte fest, dass diese "Institutionen" und auch Firmen auf anderen Gebieten die Kernpunkte der Theorie Webers, wie die Effizienz, die Vorhersagbarkeit, die Berechenbarkeit sowie die Kontrolle, vollkommen in ihre Firmenphilosophien integriert haben und dass somit die Bürokratisierung nicht mehr die höchste Stufe des Rationalismus darstellte. Da McDonalds der erfolgreichste Verfechter dieses Phänomens war und bei späteren Diskussionen in Vorlesungen und Foren immer wieder das Beispiel McDonalds genannt wurde, nahm Ritzer diesen Begriff auf und nannte die Weiterentwicklung der Theorie des Rationalismus McDonaldisierung. Dieser Sachverhalt ist auf nahezu alle Bereiche des Lebens anzuwenden, vor denen die Bürokratisierung halt gemacht hat. George Ritzer ist heute Professor an der Universität von Maryland und zählt zu den wichtigsten Soziologen der letzten Dekaden. Ursprünge der These Die McDonaldisierung ist kein Prozess, der aus dem Nichts die Welt "eroberte", sie hat ihre Wurzel in den Theorien von Max Weber bzw. in den Grundsätzen Taylors.
