La Tour wurde 1704 zu Saint Quentin geboren. Sein Vater war Kantor an dem koniglichen Stift der Kollegialkirche. Er hatte die gewohnliche, mit mancher lei Legenden ausgeschmuckte Jugend fast aller Malerauf dem Gymnasium, unter dem Rektorat Nicolas Desjardins, fullte er seine griechischen und lateinischen Hefte mit dem Bilde alles dessen, was er sah, skizzierte die Vorgange in der Klasse, seine Schulkameraden, seinen Magister und dessen strenge Amtsmiene. Den Vater ruhrte diese Befahigung wenig. Er hatte es sich in den Kopf gesetzt, den Sohn trotz seiner Kurzsichtig keit Ingenieur werden zu lassen. Jedoch alle Er mahnungen und Strafen halfen nichts, die Neigung des Knaben war nicht zu erschuttern, er fuhr fort zu zeichnen, kopierte mit der Feder alte Stiche, die er fand, und verbrauchte sein geringes Taschengeld zum Kaufen von Zeichenstiften und Vorlagen; Da gelangten eines Tages Aktzeichnungen des Malers Vernansal nach Saint Quentin; einer seiner Schuler hatte sie mit in die Stadt gebracht; der junge La Tour sah sie, fuhlte in seinem Herzen den gluhenden Wunsch" auch so etwas zu machen, und erklarte seinem Vater, da er Maler werden wolle; der Kantor jedoch, durchaus von spieburgerlichen Ideen beherrscht und ohne irgend welches Vertrauen zu diesem gewagten Berufe, ver weigerte rundheraus seine Erlaubnis zur Verwirk lichung dieser Kinderlaune. Daraufhin entfloh der junge Mann nach Paris: er war kaum funfzehn Jahre alt.

Diese Einzelheiten, die man im Abecedario Mariettes findet, sind deshalb nicht ohne Bedeutung, weil sie uns im Gegensatz zu dem Berichte des Kanonikus Du Plaquet und des Chevalier Bucelly d'estrees die An kunft La Tours auf dem Pflaster von Paris nicht als die eines schon bekannten Malers schildern, sondern als dieeines Jungen, der einfach der Schule entlaufen ist, ohne Mittel, ohne Talent, jedoch schon im Besitze eines festen Charakters und bereit, dem Leben und der Zu kunft mit dem Mut des angeborenen Berufes die Stirn zu bieten. Da er in Paris niemand von der Kunst kannte, nur auf einem Stich den Namen Tardieu gelesen hatte, schrieb er diesem Stecher und hat ihn um seinen Rat und um seine Hilfe; und Tardieu hatte, im Glauben, der junge Mann wolle Stecher werden, ihm geantwortet, er mochte sich nur auf den Weg machen und ihn besuchen. La Tour folgte der Aufforderung; als er dem Meister jedoch sagte, er wolle Maler werden, da war guter Rat teuer. Wo ihn unterbringen? Tar dieu verfiel auf Delaunay, der am Quai de Ges'vres einen Bilderladen mit einer kleinen Werkstatt hatte. Aber La Tour wurde dort abgewiesen. Vernansal, zu dem man ihn dann fuhrte, bereitete ihm keine bessere Aufnahme. Endlich fand er Zutritt bei Spoade, einem mittelmaigen Maler, aber einem vortrefflichen Men schen, bei dem er mit der Willigkeit e1nes Schulers arbeitete, der noch alles zu erlernen und zu erobern hat.
