About the Book

English summary: The ecclesiastical history of the northern countries is inseparably tied to the Lutheran churches in Germany. With the development of specific national churches, Christianity in the North has taken on a form that differs considerably from that of other countries. In this study the Rostock church historian Heinrich Holze traces the reasons for this and shows how the individual institutions fared under the conditions imposed by different national kingdoms. Holze opens his study with a discussion of the impact the Wittenberg Reformation had on the North.Beginning in the 18th century, an increase of Anglo-Saxon influences becomes noticeable, which gained entry into the northern churches through the revivalist movements and the Oxford movement. Under these influences the northern churches developed their own ecclesiastical profile, which is oriented towards trans-denominational Ecumenism and has found its distinct expression in the Anglican-Lutheran Declaration of Porvoo.
