Sie ist ein Produkt der männlichen Phantasie. Mit diesen Worten beginnt Nicolaus Sombart seinen Beitrag über die schöne Frau und den männlichen Blick in der bildenden Kunst. Auch die hässliche Frau in der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts existiert nicht, sondern ist das Produkt einer Denkrichtung, die sich von der Zeit der idealisierten Klassik abwendet und ein Plädoyer für eine realistische Darstellung beinhaltet. Das Motiv der hässlichen Frau wird sowohl von männlichen als auch weiblichen Autoren aufgegriffen. Die ausgewählten Beispiele dieser Arbeit stammen alle aus der Feder von Männern, die einen Blick auf die hässliche Frau werfen. Die Idee zu dieser Arbeit entstand während der Beschäftigung mit Adalbert Stifters Novelle Brigitta. Die gleichnamige Protagonistin war die erste als hässlich beschriebene Hauptfigur, der ich bis dahin begegnet war. Auf der Suche nach weiteren hässlichen Frauenfiguren fanden sich mehr Beispiele als erwartet, einige davon in der Trivialliteratur. Der größte Teil dieser Werke stammt aus dem 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert, was nicht zuletzt mit einer veränderten Einstellung über die Aufgabe von Literatur zusammenhängt. Das Nachdenken über die Funktion der hässlichen Frau führte zu der Frage, mit welchen normativen Vorstellungen dieses Motiv bricht. Das weitere Vorgehen galt der Forschung nach dem Ursprung des Ausdrucks 'das schöne Geschlecht'. Dieser Weg führte mich in ein mir vollkommen neues Gebiet: die Wissenschaft der Philosophie, genauer der Ästhetik. Der Philosoph Edmund Burke stellte sich als Urheber dieses Begriffs heraus, der im 18. Jahrhundert die diskursive Einheit aus Schönheit, Weiblichkeit und männlichem Begehren prägte. Diese etablierte sich über das Jahrhundert hinaus auch in medizinischen oder naturwissenschaftlichen Themenfeldern.
