Berlins Aufstieg zur Weltstadt, der sich nach der Reichsgriindung 1871 in explosions artigem Tempo binnen weniger Jahrzehnte vollzog, schu- so ein häufiges Urteil kritischer Zeitgenossen - eine Metropole, die keine ihr angemessene Form gefunden hat. "Spreeathen ist tot und Spreechi- 1 kago wächst heran", schrieb Walther Rathenau 1898 und benennt mit seiner Entgegensetzung von antiker Polis und amerikanischem Industrie- zentrum das Formlose der neuentstandenen Metropole. In dem ironisch "Die schönste Stadt der Welt" übertitelten Aufsatz zeichnet er das Bild einer in grotesker Stilvöllerei schwelgenden Stadt, die ihren modernen Metropolencharakter historistisch maskiert. Auch in Karl Scheffiets 1910 erschienenem Buch "Berlin. Ein Stadtschicksal" ist das Unvermögen der - so Scheffier - vom "Amerikanismus" ergriffenen, hypertroph wu- chernden Stadt, sich eine ausdruckskräftige Form zu geben, zentrales Thema. Allein schon ein Blick auf den Berliner Stadtplan verdeutlicht Scheffier die Monströsität der Reichshauptstadt verglichen mit anderen Hauptstädten: "Jedes lebendig und einheitlich entstandene Stadtgebilde erzählt ein gut Teil seiner Geschichte schon durch den Grundriß. ( . . . ) man liest das Epos der Stadtgeschichte, wenn man die Anordnung der Plätze und Gebäude, die Art der Benutzung von hügeligem Gelände und von Wasserläufen auf- merksam betrachtet. ( . . . ) Auf diesen Genuß muß verzichten, wer den Stadtplan Berlins ansieht., 2 Was Scheffier hier über den steinernen 'Text' der Metropole feststellt, läßt sich auf ihren literarischen übertragen. Anders als bei London und Paris, über die eine vielfältige Stadtliteratur vorliegt, blieb das "Epos" des Berlins des 19. Jahrhunderts ungeschrieben.
