Die Geschichte des Fachs Chemie an der Universitat Tubingen, zuletzt vor mehr als einhundert Jahren von Lothar Meyer beschrieben, beginnt mit der Einrichtung eines Lehrstuhls fur Botanik und Chemie im Jahre 1749, der mit Johann Georg Gmelin besetzt wurde. Auf ihn folgten in den anschliessenden rund 250 Jahren mehr als 160 Hochschullehrer, die das Ansehen des Fachs und der Hochschule nachhaltig gepragt haben. Norbert Kuhn und Eberhard Schweda zeichnen in diesem Band die Entwicklung von den Anfangen bis ins 21. Jahrhundert nach - einschliesslich einer umfassenden Schilderung der zu Forschung und Lehre bereitgestellten Laboratorien. Zusammen mit Aufstellungen der Hochschullehrer und ihrer Tatigkeit in Forschung und Lehre, aber auch in der Akademischen Selbstverwaltung, entsteht so ein vollstandiges Bild der Fachgeschichte. Im Anhang erganzt ein kurzer Uberblick zur Chemiegeschichte den breiteren historischen Kontext.

Mit dieser Darstellung der Geschichte eines grossen naturwissenschaftlichen Faches an einer Traditionsuniversitat leisten die Autoren einen Beitrag zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, der in seinem reprasentativen Charakter weit uber die Universitat Tubingen hinausreicht.


About the Author: Norbert Kuhn (geb. 1947) studierte Chemie an der Universitat Wurzburg und wurde 1975 an der Universitat Kaiserslautern promoviert. Nach seiner Assistententatigkeit in Wurzburg und Duisburg hat er sich 1983 an der Universitat Duisburg habilitiert und war bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2012 Professor fur Anorganische Chemie an den Universitaten Duisburg, Chemnitz und Tubingen. Neben der Metallorganischen Chemie gehort sein Interesse chemiegeschichtlichen Fragen. Eberhard Schweda (geb. 1950) studierte Chemie an der Universitat Tubingen und promovierte 1981 im Fach Anorganische Chemie. Danach folgten Auslandsaufenthalte an der University of Sussex (1982) und der Arizona State University (1985-1987). Er hat sich 1992 in Tubingen habilitiert und wurde 1996 zum Professor ernannt, seit 2015 befindet er sich im Ruhestand. Sein Arbeitsgebiet ist die Anorganische Festkorperchemie. Das Interesse an der Tubinger Chemie bezieht sich aber auch auf die geschichtliche Entwicklung ihrer Institute und Gebaude.
