Rund drei Jahrzehnte nach dem Erscheinen des Standardwerks 'Geschichte der Schweiz und der Schweizer' im Jahr 1982 haben es sich 33 Historiker und Historikerinnen zur Aufgabe gemacht, eine den aktuellen Forschungsstand widerspiegelnde Geschichte der Schweiz von der Urzeit bis in die Gegenwart zu schreiben. Das Feld, das ein Projekt mit diesem Anspruch abzudecken hat, die Erwartungen, die es erfullen muss, sind nicht mehr dieselben wie damals: Die Geschichtswissenschaft ist methodisch und thematisch vielfaltiger geworden, neue Gebiete wie die Geschlechtergeschichte oder die Alltagsgeschichte sind als Forschungsfelder etabliert. In 'Die Geschichte der Schweiz' haben all diese wichtigen historischen Dimensionen Eingang gefunden.
