Die Bayreuther Festspiele sind die ältesten Opernfestspiele. Dennoch gibt es bis heute kein Standardwerk zu ihrer Geschichte. Diese Lücke füllen nun die beiden Bände des renommierten Wagner- und Bayreuth-Fachmanns Oswald Georg Bauer. Auf 1292 Seiten und reich illustriert spannen sie den weiten Bogen von der ersten Idee Richard Wagners im Jahr 1850 über den Bau des Festspielhauses, die ersten Festspiele 1876, Alt- und Neubayreuth bis hin ins Jahr 2000. Sie schließen mit der Ära von Wolfgang Wagner, an der der Autor als sein langjähriger Mitarbeiter beteiligt war. Das Werk schildert nicht nur kenntnisreich die wechselvolle Geschichte der Bayreuther Festspiele. Es wird zudem jede einzelne Inszenierung und ihre Resonanz in der Presse ausführlich beschrieben und durch zahlreiche Abbildungen anschaulich gemacht. Eine klare Gliederung ermöglicht dem Leser, überall leicht in das Buch einzusteigen und es auch als Nachschlagewerk zu benutzen. Diese Publikation ist das Ergebnis langjähriger Forschungen des Autors. Er hat dafür alle verfügbaren Quellen in Archiven, Sammlungen und Bibliotheken ausgewertet, darunter sämtliche Bestände im Festspielhaus und im Nationalarchiv im Haus Wahnfried, und dabei viele neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen.
About the Author: Bauer Oswald Georg

Oswald Georg Bauer, Theaterwissenschaftler, war von 1974 bis 1985 wissenschaftlich- künstlerischer Mitarbeiter des Festspielleiters Wolfgang Wagner und seit 1976 auch Leiter des Pressebüros. Von 1986 bis 2008 war er freier Mitarbeiter von Wolfgang Wagner. Von 1986 bis 2004 Generalsekretär der Akademie der Schönen Künste in München, seit 2005 deren Ehrenmitglied. Internationale Ausstellungs-, Vortrags- und Lehrtätigkeit. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zur Theatergeschichte, vor allem über Richard Wagner und die Bayreuther Festspiele.
