Das vorliegende Buch ist ein Buch für den praktischen Ingenieur und Betriebs- mann trotz der für den Praktiker manchmal auf den ersten Blick bedrohlich er- scheinenden mathematischen Einkleidung des Stoffes. Weiterhin soll das Buch der Ausbildung des Nachwuchses dienen. Es stellt zum ersten Male Probleme der Fahrdynamik aller Verkehrsmittel nach einer einheitlichen Methode dar. Das vorliegende Gebiet habe ich seit vielen Jahren in einer Reihe von Einzelarbeiten in verschiedenen Fachzeitschriften behandelt, und meine berufliche Tätigkeit gab mir vielfach Gelegenheit, die praktische Anwendbarkeit der Fahrdynamik auf alle Verkehrsmittel zu prüfer1. Nachdem ich nun die Verfahren für den prak- tischen Gebrauch wesentlich vereinfacht habe und die Entwicklung meiner Me- thoden zu einem gewisHen Abschluß gebracht zu haben glaube, scheint es mir an der Zeit, das ganze Gebiet einmal zusammenfassend zu behandeln. Bei der Be- arbeitung des Werke: -; konnte ich auf Abhandlungen zurückgreifen, die von meinen Schülern vielfach auf mt>ine Anregung hin meist als Dissertationen verfaßt worden sind, und über die daH Quellenverzeichnis Aufschluß gibt. Die Aufgaben der Fahrdynamik sind im letzten Grunde wirtschaftlicher Natur. Die wirtschaftliche Am;wirkung eines technischen Werkes- das Wort im weite- sten Sinne genommen - - hat stets zwei scharf voneinander getrennte Seiten, den Aufwand für die erstmalige Herstellung, das sind die Baukosten, und den Aufwand für seine Benutzung und Unterhaltung, das sind die Betriebskosten.
