Die Handschrift 56 der Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen aus dem 9. Jahrhundert enthalt mit dem sogenannten Althochdeutschen Tatian eine nach ihrem angenommenen Verfasser benannte Harmonie der vier getrennten Evangelien in einer lateinischen und einer althochdeutschen Fassung. Sowohl die Textgattung als auch die Darbietung des Textes in einer Bilingue stellen eine Besonderheit dar. Wahrend die vier kanonischen Evangelien Leben, Tod und Auferstehung Jesu aus einer je eigenen Perspektive darstellen und dadurch eigene Akzentuierungen aufweisen, versucht die Gattung Evangelienharmonie die vier getrennten Evangelien zu einem einheitlichen, wenn moglich widerspruchsfreien Text zu verbinden. Wahrend im 2. Jahrhundert, also zur Entstehungszeit des Tatian, dieses Bemuhen in den Diskurs um die Glaubwurdigkeit der christlichen Kirche verortet werden kann, ist dies fur das 9. Jahrhundert, zu einer Zeit als die Debatten um die Kanonizitat der Evangelien langst abgeschlossen sind, kaum mehr moglich. Insofern bleibt die Frage, worin das spezifische Interesse bestand, diesen Text nach der Vorlage des Codex Bonifatianus 1 (Hochschul- und Landesbibliothek Fulda) in praziser Weise zu kopieren und mit einer althochdeutschen Ubersetzung zu versehen. Bislang findetsich in der altgermanistischen Literaturgeschichtsschreibung vorzugsweise das Argument, dass die Harmonie mit ihrer vermeintlich einfacheren Darstellungsweise eine besonders gut geeignete Textgattung fur die Katechese sei, wobei die althochdeutsche Ubersetzung zugleich die Brucke fur den nicht lateinisch gebildeten Leser leisten sollte. In der hier vorgenommenen Untersuchung der Handschrift wird diese Zuschreibung hinterfragt. Dabei wird die Handschrift aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln untersucht. Der Titel Studien zum Tatian spiegelt dies insofern wider, da bislang eher nebeneinander behandelte Aspekte wie Uberlieferungsgeschichte, kodikologische Aspekte, Ubersetzungsweise und die Art der Erzahlung miteinander verbunden werden. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass die Handschrift nicht nur ein ausserst anspruchsvolles Produkt karolingischer Schriftkultur ist, sondern zugleich einen Text bietet, der alles andere als einfach ist: In der spezifischen Kombinatorik und Anordnung von Textpassagen zeigt die Harmonie einen durchdachten Aufbau mit einer bewusst gesetzten theologischen Akzentuierung. Darauf scheint die Ubersetzung zu reagieren, zudem zeigt sie sich bei aller Gebundenheit an das Lateinische an zahlreichen Stellen durchaus eigenstandig und frei. Bei der Betrachtung dieser Ergebnisse entzieht sich die St. Galler Tatianbilingue daher einer einfachen Zweckbestimmung; ihr Sinn liegt moglicherweise darin, dass hier Formen und Ausdrucksweisen in experimenteller Weise gesucht wurden.
