Essay aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Kultur, Technik und Völker, Freie Universität Berlin (Soziologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Seit Urzeiten wächst die Zahl der auf der Erde lebenden Menschen nun - die Sorge, diese Entwicklung münde in Katastrophen, ist neueren Datums. Die Diskussion begann im ausgehenden 17. Jahrhundert. Vor dem Hintergrund der sogenannten ersten Bevölkerungsexplosion begann der Streit über die Frage, ob eine begrenzte "Tragfähigkeit" der Erde dem Weltbevölkerungswachstum ein Ende setze. Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts werteten englische Denker das damalige Verdopplungstempo der Weltbevölkerung als Beweis für eine globale Tendenz zur Apokalypse und die Richtigkeit entsprechender biblischer Vorhersagen. Ein Jahrhundert später formulierte Thomas Robert Malthus sein umstrittenes "Bevölkerungsgesetz". Seinen Thesen zufolge stößt ein exponentielles Wachstum der Menschenzahl zwangsläufig an Grenzen der möglichen Nahrungsproduktion. Denn die Nahrungsproduktion könne nur linear zunehmen. "Die Menschheit wächst, die Erde nicht", lautete die These der deutschen Umweltministerin Angela Merkel 1995. Ihr Ministerium hätte es wohl nie gegeben, wenn in den letzten Jahrzehnten Berichte wie "Die Grenzen des Wachstums" nicht die Angst vor ökologischen Katastrophen popularisiert hätten. Der Grundgedanke und die ins Feld geführten Argumente sind genau genommen seit Jahrhunderten dieselben: Die Natur setzt der Steigerung der menschlichen Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen eine Grenze; wird diese Grenze überschritten, führt das zu Katastrophen. Diese These hat seit jeher starke Gegner, die man grob in zwei Gruppen einteilen kann. Die eine bestreitet, dass es auf absehbare Zeit überhaupt eine Grenze des Wachstums gebe. So wandte sich der Bevölkerungstheoretiker Julian Simon Mitte der 90er Jahre an die breite Öffentlichkeit mit der These, dass "mehr Menschen...ein besonderer Wert" seien, der zwangsläufig immer zu Fortschritten für alle und auf allen Gebieten füh
